Former India spinner, Sunil Joshi has been named as the chief coach of the Assam Ranji Trophy team. Joshi has been signed by the team for the next two seasons.

The left-arm spinner had previously coached Jammu & Kashmir and Hyderabad teams. He is appointed as a replacement for his state-mate Sanath Kumar. With the upcoming Ranji season being played at neutral venues, it will be a challenge for the newly appointed coach.

However, he believes that the BCCI’s decision to have the Ranji Trophy matches at neutral venues will help players improve their skills. Joshi also expressed his happiness on his appointment as he has kept a close watch on the Assam team that reached the knockout stages in the Ranji Trophy 2015-16 season. He would be looking forward to helping them in carrying on the momentum forward

According to Cricbuzz, speaking on his appointment as Assam coach, Joshi said that the side has a good bowling line-up, but their batsmen need to contribute enough to complement the bowlers. “Assam proved that they are one of the tough teams by progressing to the Ranji Trophy semifinals last season. They have a great bowling unit while the batsmen need to contribute enough to complement their bowlers. My aim is to help them continue the good work”, said Joshi.

“When players are exposed to unfamiliar conditions they will look to improve their overall skills to excel in challenging conditions. It is one of the best initiatives by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) but they should persist with it for a minimum of three years to get results,” Joshi concluded saying.
