T20 World Cup 2021: Dwayne Bravo receives Guard of Honour from West Indies teammates in farewell match
Bravo announced that he would be retiring from international cricket as West Indies end their campaign in the global competition.
The T20 World Cup 2021 clash between West Indies and Australia marked Dwayne Bravo’s last game in national colours. The talismanic all-rounder, ahead of the game, announced that he would be retiring from international cricket as West Indies end their campaign in the global competition. The two-time champions endured a hard time in this edition and got knocked out of the semi-final race, having lost three of their first four games.
As a result, the league-stage game against the Aussies was West Indies’ last outing in the tournament. Notably, the Caribbean team’s exit was confirmed after a 20-run defeat against Sri Lanka. Following the conclusion of the game, Bravo, in an interaction with the International Cricket Council (ICC), announced that he would be hanging his boots after the end of the tournament.
With Bravo being one of the greats of the T20 format, the West Indies team took the field against Australia with an aim of making Bravo’s farewell game memorable. The 38-year-old even received a guard of honour from his teammates ahead of the second innings. The Caribbean players stand in queues, welcoming Bravo for the very last time in international cricket. Overwhelmed by his teammates’ gestures, the veteran seemed pretty emotional.
I’ve had a very good career: Dwayne Bravo
Meanwhile, Bravo, who won three ICC titles with West Indies, had said he’s grateful to represent the national team for almost two decades. “I think the time has come. I’ve had a very good career. To represent the West Indies for 18 years, had some ups and downs, but as I look back at it I’m very grateful to represent the region and the Caribbean people for so long,” Bravo had said.
“To win three ICC trophies, two with my captain [Daren Sammy] on the left here. One thing I am proud about is that in the era of cricketers we had we were able to make a name for ourselves on the global stage and not only do that but have silverware to show for it,” he added.
For the unversed, Bravo has featured in all seven T20 World Cups and helped West Indies to lift the trophy twice. He retired with 91 T20I caps as well as more than 500 appearances in the format overall.
