The English team surprised everybody again with their selection in the 3rd Test against South Africa. They named 3 debutants in the side including the likes of Tom Westley and Dawid Malan who had a terrific outing in the domestic season in England. The 28-year old Westley impressed many with his solid batting ability even after an ordinary score of 25 in the first innings.

England still needs 6 wickets to win the Test match as well as the series on the final day of the crucial encounter. They have set a target of 492 for the Proteas in the second innings. At the end of the 4th Day’s play, the visitors were 117/4 and need to bat out 98 overs to save the game on the final day of the Test match.

Westley’s solid temperament

The 28-year-old scored an impressive 59 in the second innings of the match. He was fluent in his stroke making, which immediately led to his comparison with former English captain Michael Vaughan. The right-handed batsman has started to impress many of the former stalwarts of the game including Nasser Hussain.

“When I first saw Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick I was struck by how calm and composed they were at the crease and Tom Westley similarly impressed me with his temperament on Test debut,” Hussain was quoted by the Daily Mail.

He was also impressed with the technique and character the debutant displayed in his first ever international game. “Technique is important, of course, but the most crucial thing at the highest level is character and, watching him play at The Oval, talking to him and seeing him go about his business, Westley does seem to have a bit about him,” Hussain added while equating Westley with Vaughan.

The Essex star scored 478 runs at an average of 53 while playing for the team in the county season. He received his maiden call-up to Test side after left-hander Gary Ballance was injured. The 28-year-old still has a long and challenging journey ahead of him to showcase his talent and contribute to the English cricket.

“Westley is making his debut at what I think is a good age of 28 because he has been round the traps, knows his game inside out and, unlike someone like Haseeb Hameed, and has been through the ups and downs before arriving at the top,” Nasser concluded.
