Top 10 Batsmen with most 125 plus scores in ODIs

Scoring a century in ODIs is anything but an easy feat. It takes time, fitness, patience and guts to compile a century. A batsman tends to lose some focus after getting to the triple figures and that makes the bigger knocks even tougher to get. He has to concentrate harder to avoid dropping the guard and getting out. And since it is something masters are known to do, scoring a big hundred gives the batsman lot more confidence. The value of a ton grows even more when it’s a score in excess of 125, and we often see batsmen carry it on to plunder 150s and even 200s these days. Here are the batsmen with most 125 plus scores in ODIs. 10. Tillakaratne Dilshan – 6: Tillakaratne Dilshan. (© Getty Images) The evergreen Tillakaratne Dilshan was a mainstay of the Sri Lankan batting order since his arrival on the international scene. A naturally aggressive batsman, opening seemed to be a tailormade role for him. Dilshan has been known to decimate bowling attacks with his hard hitting and ability to pierce gaps on the field. He has crossed the 125 run mark on six occasions in ODIs, with his highest score being 161 not out. The score came against Bangladesh at Chittagong in January 2009. 9. Following Virender Sehwag’s exit, Rohit Sharma has provided the perfect solution to India’s top order batting problem. A classy and elegant player, Rohit’s ability to accelerate the innings at will is something certainly commendable. He smashed 264 against Australia in Bangalore, making him the highest individual scorer of all time in ODIs. 8. Ricky Ponting – 7: Australia’s Ricky Ponting (Photo by ALEXANDER JOE/AFP/Getty Images) Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting too features on this elite list with 7 scores above 125. Ponting has smashed exactly 30 tons in ODIs, with his highest score of 164 coming against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2006. On the day, Ponting was absolutely unstoppable as he lorded over a rather feeble South African attack lacking the leadership of Shaun Pollock. 7. Virat Kohli – 7: India’s batsman Virat Kohli. Kohli’s reliability, calmness, and controlled aggression has seen him become a regular in the Indian team since 2008. Kohli’s best innings came in Hobart against Sri Lanka. With the pressure mounting, Kohli played with irresistible freedom to score a brilliant 183 to see India reach the target in 37 overs. 6. AB de Villiers – 7: AB de Villiers. A player with fantastic talent and proven shot making, de Villiers has scored over 125 runs on 7 occasions. He also holds the distinction of scoring the fastest ODI century. He is also regarded as the batsman who can decimate any bowling attack in the world. 5. Hashim Amla – 7: Hashim Amla. (© ANESH DEBIKY/AFP/Getty Images) Hashim Amla aka Mr. Consistent has crossed the 125 run mark 7 times. The universal truth when Amla bats, he always goes on to make a massive ton. His classy and wristy strokeplay has seen him become one of the top-ranked ODI players in the world. Amla has been in runs since he debuted for South Africa and is regarded as the run-machine of the team. 4. Sourav Ganguly – 9: Indian cricketer Saurav Ganguly. The former Indian skipper will always be remembered for the centuries made in trying circumstances. Ganguly’s 183 against Sri Lanka at Taunton at the 1999 Cricket World Cup has become part of Indian folklore. He formed a formidable opening pair along with master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and is one of the best left-hand batsmen to have featured in the game. 3. Playing as a genuine opening batsman, Jayasuriya’s exploits also saw him skipper the side on a few occasions. Playing on a rather dry wicket at Sharjah, Jayasuriya took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners as he smashed 189 off just 161 balls. 2. Chris Gayle – 10: Chris Gayle. The 36-year-old southpaw from Jamaica has impressed one and all with his amazing striking ability. With massive arms and a heavy bat, it is almost certain that Gayle can find the fence without much trouble. Despite his fallout with the WICB, Gayle will always be remembered for his 215 against Zimbabwe at Canberra in the World Cup 2015. 1. Sachin Tendulkar – 19: Sachin Tendulkar. Apart from a plethora of cricketing records, the little master crossed the 125 run mark 19 times in his career, leading his compatriots by a country mile.
