Top 10 captains involved in most losses in international Cricket

Captains hold a very prominent position in cricket. They make sure the team takes a victorious course to the culmination of the match. However, every time the captain cannot lead the team from the front along with making significant individual contributions to the team. There are innumerable times when things don't go to plan and teams lose despite a captain's best efforts. These losses are detrimental to the teams and also reflect badly on the captain's individual records. Here we look at the Top 10 Captains involved in most losses in international Cricket: 10. Imran Khan (Pakistan) – 67 losses Imran Khan. (Photo by Patrick Eagar/Popperfoto/Getty Images) Pakistan’s most successful captain holds the unusual record of leading his side to the most losses as well. Given the number of matches he has led his side in, brings Imran Khan to this list. Under Imran Khan Pakistan lost a total of 67 matches out of 187. He led Pakistan in 48 Test matches and his side lost only 8 of those. However, Pakistan lost 59 matches under Imran Khan out of 139 ODIs making him the first entrant into this list. 9. Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 77 losses Ricky Ponting with WC trophy. (Photo Source: ICC) Ricky Ponting was the most successful captain in International Cricket, but he is among the top 10 captains who led their side to losses on more number of occasions as well. Under Ponting, Australia played 324 matches and lost only 77 matches. He led Australia in 16 Test losses out of the 77 matches and saw his team lose on 51 occasions out of 225 in 50-over cricket. He captained his side in 10 T20I losses as well which takes his tally to 77 losses, taking him 9th on this list. 8. Sourav Ganguly (India) – 79 losses Sourav Ganguly 131 vs England at Lord’s in England in 1996. (Photo Source: twitter) Sourav Ganguly was one of the best captains the World has ever seen but he is also one of the few captains under whom the side lost a good number of games. In 196 matches under Ganguly’s captaincy, India lost 78 matches overall, with 65 coming in ODIs and 13 in Test cricket. Another loss came when he led Asia XI in an ODI vs ICC World XI. 7. Brian Lara (West Indies) – 85 losses Brian Lara (Image source: Twitter) You might call Brian Lara unlucky to be leading West Indies during one of its worst phases despite him being very good with his contributions. Lara, who led the Caribbean Islands from 1994 to 2007 saw his side lose on 85 occasions out of the total of 172 matches. 26 of those came in the 47 Test matches he was the skipper of West Indies with a poor win/loss ratio of 0.38, whereas in ODIs his team lost 59 games out of 125 matches under Lara. 6. Graeme Smith (South Africa) – 89 losses Graeme Smith with Test Mace. (Photo Source : Gettyimages) Despite being one of the most successful captains, Graeme Smith makes it into this list as South Africa were on the losing side 89 times in 286 matches during the 11 years period of his captaincy. Smith led South Africa to 29 test losses, the most by any other captain in Test cricket. However, his side lost in 51 ODIs out of the 150 matches and the other 9 came in the shortest version of the game. 5. Allan Border (Australia) – 89 losses Allan Border. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Even though Allan Border led Australia to a great number of victories as captain, he managed to be on the list of captains on the losing end on most occasions as Australia lost 89 times in 271 matches under Border. Border’s team lost 67 ODIs and 22 Tests while he acted as the Australian captain. 4. Mohammad Azharuddin (India) – 90 losses Mohammad Azharuddin. (© Getty Images) Leading the Indian team in one of its toughest phases, Azharuddin led his side to 90 losses. He was captain of the Indian team in 221 matches where on 90 occasions they ended on the losing end. 76 losses coming in ODIs made him the Indian captain with the most losses in ODIs. The remaining 14 losses for India during Azharuddin’s captaincy came in Test Cricket. 3. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka) – 114 losses Arjuna Ranatunga. (© Getty Images) Arjuna Ranatunga might be the player who changed the direction of Sri Lankan Cricket with his famous victories but he also sits towards the top of the list of captains with the most losses in International Cricket. In the 249 matches he acted as captain, Sri Lanka lost 114 games with 95 of those coming in the ODI format, the 2nd most losses for any captain who led his side in the ODI format. Another 19 losses came in when he was leading the Test team. 2. MS Dhoni (India) – 120 losses MS Dhoni. Under MS Dhoni, India lost 109 out of the 297 matches he led with 74 coming from ODIs and 18 losses in Tests. In T20Is, Dhoni led India to 28 losses, the most losses for any captain in T20Is. 1. Stephen Fleming (New Zealand) – 135 losses Stephen Fleming. (Photo Source: Getty Images) No doubt in saying Stephen Fleming was New Zealand’s most successful captain but he is also the captain to be a part of most losses than any other in International cricket. In the 303 matches, Fleming acted as the skipper New Zealand lost 135 matches. Out of those, 27 losses came in 80 matches he led in Tests, the 2nd most losses for a Test captain overall and 106 ODI losses, the most for any other ODI captain. The other 2 losses came when Fleming led his side New Zealand in T20Is.
