Top 10 Lowest totals in the Ashes: The Ashes is by far the most coveted and traditional rivalry in cricket history. The Urn’s worth is not to be estimated by its size but by the emotions attached to it. Whenever England and Australia contest for an Ashes series the record book is almost certain to have new chapters added in it.
From highest team scores to the batting collapses, from the lethal spells to batting masterclasses. The Ashes has had it all. Stuart Broad was on fire on the first morning of the ongoing Trent Bridge Test as he demolished the Aussie batting to inflict misery Clarke’s men. His fantastic spell ensured the Aussies were dismissed for a paltry 60, which was the ninth lowest total in the history of Ashes. It was also their seventh lowest score in test history and their second lowest in last 79 years. Nine of Australia’s 10 lowest totals have come against England. This was also the shortest Test innings in terms of balls (111 balls). The innings lasted just 94 minutes and the English openers had to come up even before Lunch. This was the fourth time a team had been dismissed before lunch.
Broad was perhaps at his best in Trent Bridge since he got all wickets pitching the ball up. Given that it is not his natural length, it was a commendable effort. His consistency was exemplary and he chose not to try too hard and put the ball in the right areas. The pitch and the overcast conditions helped him and his job was also made easier by the lackluster technique of the visitors. Seeming reluctant to learn from their mistakes they were more interested in giving the English fielders catching practice in the slips.
Broad’s figures was the best performance by a bowler in an innings at Trent Bridge as he went past Muttiah Muralitharan. Looking at the numbers since 2000, Broad’s figures are the best by a pacer and it is only the third 8-wicket haul by a fast bowler. This was also the best figures for England in Ashes since Jim Laker took 10 wickets in 1956.
