Top 10 Stadiums that have hosted most ODIs: Every cricket playing nation boasts of beautiful cricket stadiums. There is an eternal connect between the masses, beloved players and the game itself. Some of these stadiums are over a century old and are vintage while some are situated in picturesque locations. These stadiums have witnessed some of the most memorable moments of the game. Players and cricket fans have many memories attached to it. The atmosphere in these sporting arenas is electric. It evokes enthusiasm and wild emotions in the heart of the spectators. Lively crowd, with their noise levels, pump up confidence of the teams. Not only cricket but every sport, is off course, in every sense, incomplete without these wonderful stadiums. (© Getty Images) Located in the Auckland, Eden Park is the biggest cricket stadium in New Zealand. It has been home to cricket in Auckland since the year 1900. It has a capacity of 55,000 spectators. It is multi-purpose ground which transforms itself as a Rugby stadium during winters. Thus, the unique shape of a baseball diamond. Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe (719 runs) and Chris Cairns (33 wickets) have the highest number of runs and wickets on this ground in ODIs. The record for the highest team total is held by the home team New Zealand. They posted a massive 340/5 versus Australia in 2007. (© Getty Images) The Brisbane Cricket Ground is situated in the suburbs of Woolloongabba and is famously known as Gabba. It was established in the year 1895. It was redeveloped some years back and has a capacity of holding 37,000 fans at once. This stadium has witnessed many memorable cricketing incidents in the past. The first ODI organized on this ground was between Australia and West Indies in 1979. And, since then 75 ODIs have been hosted here. Dean Jones (543 runs) holds the record for scoring the highest number of runs at this venue while Glenn McGrath (15 scalps) has taken the most number of wickets. 8. This ground, established in 1893, was built on old swamp land. The WACA earned a reputation for being a fast and hard track with lot of bounce. As a result of the redevelopment in 2002, the permanent capacity of the stadium is of 22,000 spectators. The first ODI on this ground was played between India and New Zealand on Dec 9, 1980. Australian great Dean Jones with 545 runs to his name is the highest run-getter on this ground. The ’Sultan of Swing’ Wasim Akram has claimed 26 wickets and has the highest number of wickets on this ground. In all, WACA has hosted 78 ODIs till now. 7. The Adelaide Oval was opened in 1873. The ground is actually oval shaped which makes straight sixes a rarity but the ones square of the wicket are more common. It has a capacity of holding 50,000 spectators at once. So far, 81 ODIs have been played in this venue. The first ODI played on this ground played between Australia and West Indies in the year 1975. In ODIs, Michael Clarke (626 runs) and Brett Lee (23) wickets top the list of the highest run getters and wicket takers at this venue. 6. Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Bangladesh – 93: Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Bangladesh. The facilities and infrastructure of this ground are very impressive, especially it’s drainage system which is one of the best in the world. It hosted its first ODI between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh on December 8, 2006. It was built with the purpose of building a purely cricket stadium as most of the stadiums in Bangladesh host Football apart from cricket matches. Sher-e-Bangla Stadium has hosted 90 ODI matches. Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan with 2034 runs and 89 wickets in ODIs is the highest run-getter as well as the highest wicket-taker on this ground. 5. It came into existence due to the efforts of the late Sri Lanka President Ranasinghe Premadasa. It is the biggest stadium in Sri Lanka. The stadium which was opened on February 2, 1986, was built on swampland. The inaugural one-day international was played on April 5, 1986 between Sri Lanka and New Zealand and since then it has hosted 118 ODIs until this year. The Matara Mauler Sanath Jayasuriya (2514) has the most number of the runs at this venue while Muthiah Muralitharan with 75 wickets is the highest wicket getter on this ground. 4. Harare Sports Club, Zimbabwe – 126: Harare Sports Club, Zimbabwe. (© Getty Images) The Harare Sports Club formerly known as Salisbury Sports Club is situated in in the heart of Harare, Zimbabwe. It is bordered by the heavily-guarded presidential palace on one side and the prestigious Royal Harare Gold Club on another. It is not a huge stadium as compared to other majestic stadiums around the world. The club itself does not possess any of the major stands and has modest capacity is of 10,000 which can be increased with temporary stands. It has hosted 126 matches so far. The first ODI was played between the home team and India in the year 1992. Zimbabwean Brendon Taylor (1889 runs) is the highest run getter while Prosper Utseya with 52 wickets is the highest wicket taker at this venue. 3. The MCG is the 10th-largest stadium in the world, the largest in Australia, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, the largest cricket ground by capacity, and has the tallest light towers of any sporting venue. Before re-development, the stadium had a capacity of 1,25,000 which has now reduced to 90,000. The first ODI match was played here on January 5, 1971 when Australia played a one-off ODI against England. The MCG, also known as “The G,” has hosted 144 ODIs till now. Ricky Ponting is the highest run getter at this vintage ground with 2108 runs in 41 matches. Spin great Shane Warne (46) is the top wicket-taker here. 2. It has a capacity of over 40,000 patrons. Just like every cricket ground in Australia, it is a very picturesque ground with a beautiful outfield and huge stands. The first official ODI was played on January 13, 1979 between Australia and England and since then has hosted 151 ODIs. Former Australian captain Allan Border with 1561 runs in 65 matches top the batting charts at this ground whereas Glenn McGrath with 50 scalps holds the record of taking the most number of wickets in 27 ODIs on this ground. 1. One of the rare cricket grounds at which ODIs have been played without a home country participant (and the only international Stadium in a non-Test playing country). Sharjah is a popular venue attracting good crowds mostly from the India, Pakistan and South Asian population of the United Arab Emirates. It holds a world record of being the first stadium to have hosted 200 ODIs after the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in November 2011.
