In the World T20 Finals against Australia, the New Zealand captain showcased his best form, slamming 85 off just 48 balls. Williamson redeemed himself in the finals after a lacklustre batting performance earlier in the tournament and destroyed a quality Australian attack. He showed his attacking prowess by taking on Mitchell Starc, arguably the best white-ball Australian bowler in that lineup.

New Zealand got off to a sluggish start, with Daryl Mitchell out early and Martin Guptill unable to middle the ball. Williamson took his time settling into the crease and then went on a rampage in the 11th over of the innings, hitting Mitchell Starc for 19 runs. He then kept the momentum going by hitting Starc for 22 runs in his next over, rallying his side to a formidable 172-run total.

In his innings, Williamson smashed ten fours and three sixes and established himself as the primary aggressor against pace bowling. He took his time with Zampa before unleashing his best against the other bowlers. It was the highest score by a captain in the World T20 Finals. Despite the fact that New Zealand lost the match, this innings is remembered as one of the most memorable in a Final and has become one of his career highlights.
