The much-anticipated third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to kick off later this month and will witness a plethora of international stars taking part in the mega-event. The last two editions have garnered a lot of popularity with the upcoming season promising to be bigger than ever. The tournament comes as an important development in Pakistan’s effort to revive international cricket in the nation. Countries have rejected touring the war-ravaged country after a terror attack on the Sri Lankan team. While the majority of the PSL is played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the finale of season 2 took place in Lahore, Pakistan. And unlike its previous edition, season 3 will see the country host even the knockout stages of the tournament. Thus with a lot of festivities in the offing, Pakistani cricket fanatics are waiting with baited breath for PSL 3 to kickoff. And ahead of the season, we take a recap of the top 5 run-scores in the league so far. 5. Ravi Bopara (England) – 488 runs Ravi Bopara. With 448 runs at a stupendous strike rate of 120.43, Bopara will play a pivotal role in the Karachi Kings franchise going into season 3. His consistent form in limited-overs cricket coupled his medium-pace bowling makes him a useful weapon for any skipper. He has been more consistent with a series of increasingly mature display and will be bringing in a lot of experience into the Karachi side. A talented, wristy stroke player, capable of opening the innings or batting in the middle order, the right-hander has successfully plied his trade in various T20 leagues all across the globe. 4. Kevin Pietersen (England) – 456 runs Kevin Pietersen. (Photo Source: Twitter) The England star who played a clinical role in guiding Quetta Gladiators to the finals of the last season will aim for a similar feat this time around. However, a disappointing moment for the franchise was when Pietersen rejected to travel to Pakistan for the summit clash. And this year too, the switch-hit maker is yet to decide on his future. Unlike last season when the management was shell-shocked after the news, this year they have not lacked behind in finding a replacement. In case the English veteran refuses to change his stance on the matter, the team already has a substitute in fellow countrymen Jason Roy. With 456 runs at an explosive strike rate of 140.74, it will be a definite miss for the Gladiators if Pietersen doesn’t feature in the business end of the tournament, shall the team progress that far. 3. Umar Akmal (Pakistan) – 499 runs Umar Akmal. (Photo Source: Twitter) Pakistan top-order batsman Umar Akmal, who will play for his home team Lahore Qalandars is amongst the top performers in the league. The right-hander has scored 499 runs at a blistering strike rate – 144.63 that earns him the third spot of all time highest run-scorers in the PSL. His fearlessness at the crease and his wide array of strokes had pundits gushing for superlatives and will play a pivotal role in the Qalandars setup. After being wrongly accused of involvement in last year’s spot-fixing case, Akmal will aim to bury his past horrors and start afresh. 2. Kamran Akmal (Pakistan) – 504 runs Kamran Akmal. (Photo Source: Twitter) The top of the leaderboard shows the domination of Pakistani cricketer as wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal takes the second spot. He enjoyed a scintillating outing in 2017 after opening his campaign with a magnificent 88 of 48 just 48 balls against Islamabad United. With impeccable statistics of 504 runs, the high score of 104, Akmal is one of the leading cricketers in the PSL. He is only the second cricketer to hit a century in the tournament after Sharjeel Khan’s 117 in the inaugural season. The gloveman went on to finish the tournament as the leading run-scorer with 353 runs and won the green cap and the Hanif Mohammad Award for the best batsman as well as the Imtiaz Ahmed award for the best wicketkeeper of the season with a total of 12 dismissals. 1. Ahmed Shehzad (Pakistan) – 532 runs Ahmed Shehzad. (Photo Source: Twitter) The second cricketer of the Quetta Gladiators to feature in the list, Ahmed Shahzad tops the leaderboard after amassing a whopping 532 runs in just 20 matches. A linchpin in the batting order, the 27-year-old boasts of a rich repertoire of strokes. Shahzad will once again be expected to provide his impetus at the top of the batting order. The Gladiators, who qualified for the finals in both seasons but failed to put their hands on the trophy, will rely heavily on the right-hander’s services for the upcoming season.
