The recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy produced some brilliant bowling performances. The final, which was a floodlit affair at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, was contested between Uttar Pradesh and Baroda. UP proved too strong on account of their superior bowling and lifted the cup for the first time. Here’s a look at the top 5 run scorers in the competition. 5. Nathu Singh: Nathu Singh. In 6 matches he took 14 wickets at 8.57 and an economy rate of 5.00 He took 2 four-wicket hauls with a best of 4/13 against Kerala in Kochi. The right-arm pace bowler has pace and national selectors will keep a close eye on his progress. He even made it to the Indian Board President’s XI side that faced the visiting South Africa in 2015. 4. C V Stephen: (Photo Source: ESPNcricinfo) The left-arm medium pacer plays for Andhra Pradesh in domestic cricket. He played 6 matches and took 14 wickets at 8.50 and an economy rate of 5.80. He took 2 four-wicket hauls and one five-for. His best was 5/52 against Delhi in Vadodara. Stephen made his debut for Andhra in 2013 and has been a consistent wicket taker for his team. The pacer is a fine prospect and his progress will be keenly followed by all parties concerned. 3. The leg-spinner bowled a brilliant spell in the final as well (0/16 from 4) that kept the pressure on the Baroda batsmen. His economy rate was 5.94 and his best spell of 4/28 was against Maharashtra in Cuttack. The experienced bowler played a major part for his team throughout the tourney. Chawla has been out of the national side since 2012 and will be eyeing a comeback. 2. Dhawal Kulkarni: Dhawal Kulkarni. His economy rate was 6.72 from the 31.4 overs he bowled throughout the tourney. His best spell was 3/35 against Karnataka in Cuttack. Kulkarni has been the spearhead of his team since many years now. He has also played for India and will be eyeing a regular spot in the national side. 1. Irfan Pathan: A much fitter Irfan is keen on making up for the lost time and is eyeing a comeback to the national side. Irfan’s bowling was top notch and he swung the new ball well. His 17 wickets at 15.76 in 10 matches include a five-for and a four-for. His captaincy also been superb and he has backed the younger players in the squad. His best of 5/13 was against Assam in Vadodara. He batted brilliantly as well scoring 200 runs at an average of 40.00 and a strike rate of 152.67. A much fitter Irfan is keen on making up for the lost time and is eyeing a comeback to the national side.
