Twitter calls for Hashim Amla to retire from the highest level
He bagged a golden duck in the first innings of the second Test.
South Africa were dented with a blow as they lost the opening Test against Sri Lanka by one run courtesy of Kusal Perera’s superlative knock of 153. The match also didn’t pan out well for Hashim Amla, the 35-year-old Natal-born batsman. He has been awfully out of form over the last few weeks and run-making has turned out to be a mountain climb for the experienced campaigner.
He did reasonably in the three-match Test series against Pakistan but hasn’t been able to do well against the Lankans, captained by Dimuth Karunaratne, by any stretch of the imagination. In the first game at the Kingsmead in Durban, the right-hander could only notch 17 runs. In the first innings, Suranga Lakmal accounted for his prized scalp after he scored three.
Left-arm pacer Vishwa Fernando nipped him out in the second innings for 16. The second and final Test of the series is currently underway at the St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth and the veteran Amla has flattered to deceive yet another time, sparking talks, surrounding his retirement from international cricket. The Proteas won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first.
Amla succumbs to another failure
Fernando removed opener Dean Elgar for six following which Amla took guard. In seamer-friendly conditions, he was expected to bail the hosts out of jail. However, to South Africa’s dismay, he couldn’t deliver and fell for a golden duck as the Proteas lost their second wicket in the sixth over. The speedster churned out a full-length delivery and Amla had absolutely no clue about it.
The ball swung back sharply and beat Amla all ends up. The leather, therefore, crashed into the stumps, leaving Hashim dejected. Quite expectantly, Twitterati isn’t happy with the batter’s performance and the users on the social media platform have called for his retirement.
Here is how Twiter showed its frustration
