India’s chase of 177 was pretty smooth as they crossed the line with six wickets in hand.
The Rohit Sharma era is underway in Indian great and his first ODI assignment in full-time roll couldn’t have been more fruitful. The Men in Blue thrashed West Indies by six wickets in the opening ODI, earning a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Spin duo Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar bowled spectacular spells as the visitors were skittled out for a paltry 176.
India’s chase was pretty smooth as they crossed the line with six wickets in hand. It must be noted that the clash marked history with the home team becoming the first side to feature in 1000 ODIs. Rohit Sharma’s men made the occasion even more special by recording a brilliant win.
Earlier in the game, India won the toss and elected to bowl at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. West Indies’ batting order suffered a shocking collapse as wickets fell in a cluster. Having been reduced to 79/7, the Men in Maroon were under the threat of getting bundled out under 100. However, former skipper Jason Holder joined forces with Fabien Allen and the duo showed some resilience.
Rohit Sharma shines in maiden leadership assignment in ODIs
The former scored a half-century as West Indies somehow managed 176 in 43.5 overs. On expected lines, India didn’t face much trouble in crossing the line. Skipper Rohit Sharma opened the batting alongside Ishan Kishan and the duo pushed the visitors out of the contest.
While Rohit attacked bowlers from the outset, Kishan was happy to take his time. The Indian skipper made a quick-fire half-century as the openers added 84 runs for the first wicket. The departure of Kishan, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in quick succession added some spice in the contest.
However, Suryakumar Yadav joined forces with debutant Deepak Hooda, and the duo made sure there’s no twist in the tale. They added 62 runs for the fifth wicket in quick time, as the hosts crossed the line in just 28 overs. Chahal was adjudged the Player of the Match for his remarkable four-wicket haul.
It must be noted that India are without the services many key players, who tested positive for COVID-19. However, this factor didn’t trouble the hosts at least in the opening game. On the other hand, West Indies have a lot of thinking to do ahead of the second clash.
