Former Prime Minister of India and the architect of the country’s economic liberalisation, Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. His demise, due to age-related medical complications, was confirmed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh quickly pushed up the ranks for his exceptional academic capabilities and dedication to public service. He served as India’s 13th Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
Before assuming the nation’s highest political office, he was the Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. It was during this tenure in 1991 that Dr. Singh introduced groundbreaking economic reforms that changed India’s route, pulling the nation from near bankruptcy and assisting into an era of liberalisation and global integration.
He was the first Sikh to hold the Prime Minister’s office and the first leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a full term.
Political leaders, dignitaries, and citizens along with the cricket fraternity paid tribute to the former PM. Furthermore, the Indian cricket team sported wearing black armbands during the second day of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as a mark of respect.
