On Wednesday, India and Sri Lanka were facing off each other for the final ODI at the R. Premadasa stadium. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka has been lucky to win the toss in all three matches of the series. After winning the toss, Sri Lanka came into bat and posted a total of 248 runs with the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

The hosts only made one change, Maheesh Theekshana took Akila Dananjaya's place. After a 21-month break, India's Rishabh Pant was given the chance to play in an ODI again, replacing KL Rahul, and Arshdeep Singh was replaced by Riyan Parag, who made his ODI debut.

Two major partnerships created the conditions for Sri Lanka to amass a formidable total. Still, Riyan Parag stepped in decisively, dismissing Avishka Fernando for 96 and LBW for the Sri Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka halting the Lankans' momentum. Sri Lanka ended their innings at 248/7 as the middle order collapsed badly, with Kamindu Mendis making a late 23-run knock. Though all of the spinners gave excellent performances, Parag was the most effective bowler, taking three wickets and displaying his skill.

For India, Rohit Sharma led the powerplay and launched a furious attack yet again. But the same story played out, with his teammates falling prey to the Sri Lankans' relentless spin attack. The continuous loss of wickets significantly damaged the Indian innings. Four middle-order and lower-order batters failed to reach double figures after the eighth wicket fell at 101 runs. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav tried their best to turn things around, but in the end, they were unable to prevent India from losing by 110 runs. With this defeat, Sri Lanka won their first bilateral series against India since 1997, making it a historic triumph.
