The Indian bowlers had a sigh of relief on the second day when they bowled Australia out for 469 runs on Day 2 of the ongoing World Test Championship 2023 Final. But what followed next was a terrible sight to see for all Indian fans across the world, as team India suffered a horrendous collapse, which saw top batters walk off the crease in no time.

After Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Cheteshwar Pujara’s early dismissals, it looked like Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane would manage to stabilize India’s innings and cover the gap, but things fell off the track when Mitchell Starc dismissed Kohli cheaply for a 31-ball 14. Starc bowled an off-cutter delivery, but the bounce did not well as the ball hit the edge of the bat, clipped his gloves and straight-away landed into Steve Smith’s hands.

Smith, who was placed at second slip, timed his jump to perfection and grabbed the ball brilliantly as Kohli found his way back to the dugout. As a result, India were left reeling at 71/4 after 18.2 overs. Before Kohli’s dismissal, Australian skipper Pat Cummins gave his side the perfect start by dismissing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.

The Australian bowlers did not let the Indian batters get over Rohit’s dismissal, as Scott Boland struck in the very next over and sent Shubman Gill packing. India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara, who had recently enjoyed a brilliant County stint in England, failed to keep up with the expectations and gave his wicket away in a similar style to Gill.

In the seven innings of the four games that Kohli has played so far at The Oval, he now has 183 runs at an average of 26.14, with his highest score of 50 being his only half-century at the venue. A downfall in India’s batting unit saw Ravindra Jadeja and Rahane taking charge of the innings, but nevertheless, the Australian bowlers continue to trouble India.
