Twitter Reactions: India clinch Border Gavaskar Trophy for fourth consecutive time as final Test ends in stalemate
India won the series by 2-1 as the fourth Test ended in a draw.
The four-match Test series between India and Australia reached its culmination on Monday, March 13 as the fourth Test played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad ended in a draw.
Australia resumed their innings on 3/0 on Day 5 with Matthew Kuhnemann and Travis Head at the crease. India got their first wicket early in the day as Ravichandran Ashwin trapped night watchman Kuhnemann in front of the stumps and sent him back to the pavilion.
However, there wasn’t much the bowlers could do as the pitch didn’t deteriorate enough to provide assistance to them on Day 5. Following the fall of the first wicket, Marnus Labuschagne joined Head at the crease and the duo looked untroubled at the crease. They added 139 runs for the second wicket with the game moving towards an inevitable draw.
Head was inching towards his hundred batting on 90, however, he couldn’t reach the landmark as he was cleaned up by Axar Patel in the second session. At the other hand, Labuschagne completed his half-century and was joined by Steve Smith at the crease.
The duo didn’t take many risks and batted through the overs with the game heading nowhere. With just 18 overs remaining in the day’s play and Australia ahead by 84 runs with eight wickets in hand, the captains decided to shake hands and end the Test as a draw. As a result, India clinched the series 2-1 and won their fourth consecutive Border Gavaskar Trophy as they’re holding it since 2017.
Ravichandran Ashwin finished as the highest wicket-taker
Usman Khawaja finished as the leading run-scorer of the series, scoring 333 runs at an average of 47.57 with one hundred and two fifties to his name. Ravichandran Ashwin finished as the leading wicket-taker having 25 wickets to his name at an average of 17.28.
Virat Kohli was awarded Player of the Match for his knock of 186 which ended his 1204-day century drought in the longest format. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were jointly awarded Player of the Series as Jadeja was the joint second-highest wicket-taker along with Nathan Lyon having 22 scalps to his name. He also scored 135 runs in five innings with one half century to his name and was also awarded Player of the Match in the first two matches.
