The sun finally rose in the Australian camp after a couple of dark nights as they registered their first win in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 over Sri Lanka on Monday, October 16 in Lucknow. The Pat Cummins-led side beat Kusal Mendis’ men by five wickets as they managed to surmount the target of 210 in 35.2 overs and won the match by five wickets.

The situation was once again tense in the Australian dressing room as they continued their trend of losing early wickets. Opener David Warner (11 off 6), unfortunately, was adjudged lbw by the on-field umpire despite the ball coming in with the angle and hitting his right pad. Even the review couldn’t save the southpaw as the umpire’s call on hitting brought curtains on his innings.

Dilshan Madushanka became the thorn in Australia’s flesh as after dismissing Warner he accounted for Steve Smith (0 off 5) in the same over by trapping him in front of the stumps. Mitchell Marsh (52 off 51) seemed determined to take his team home after he scored a brilliant fifty but an untimely run-out forced him to warm the seat in the pavilion for the rest of the innings.

A 77-run stand between Marnus Labuschagne (40 off 60) and Josh Inglis (58 off 59) brought a sense of calm in the Australian dressing room. Following their dismissals, Glenn Maxwell (31* off 21) and Marcus Stoinis (20* off 10) made sure there were no more hiccups in the run chase and guided their team to a five-wicket win.

Sri Lanka collapsed after a great start

Earlier in the day, having opted to bat first, Sri Lankan openers Kusal Perera (78 off 82) and Pathum Nissanka (61 off 67) helped their side get off to a great start by adding 125 runs off 130 balls. However, following their dismissals, Adam Zampa (4/47) sparked a dramatic middle-order collapse which led to them getting bundled out for 209 in 43.3 overs. Skipper Cummins (2/32, 7 overs) and Mitchell Starc (2/43) also preyed on two Sri Lankan batters each.
