For the first time in three matches, Dhaka Dynamites were put under the pump as they huffed and puffed against defending champions Rangpur Riders. In the end, they won by two wickets in the last over to continue their unbeaten streak in this edition’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The Mashrafe Mortaza-captained Riders, despite the defeat, are at the second position of the points table.

Pollard plunders the Riders

The Riders had a promising start after they won the toss and elected to bowl first as they reduced Dhaka to 33 for three in the fourth over. The likes of Hazratullah Zazai and Sunil Narine couldn’t deliver and fell prey to Sohag Gazi and Mortaza respectively. Rony Talukdar went hammer and tongs to score 18 from eight balls, but he became Gazi’s second victim. Mizanur Rahman couldn’t survive the heat either.

Thereafter, the hulk-like Kieron Pollard took the onus upon himself and racked up a much-needed 62 runs from 26 balls with five fours and four sixes. He built a stand of 78 runs with the experienced Shakib Al Hasan, who scored a 37-ball 36, to bring the Dynamites into the match. Andre Russell cleared the ropes three times to notch 23 from 13 balls and propelled Dhaka to a formidable 183 for nine in 20 overs.

Rossouw’s effort in vain

The Riders didn’t have a good start as Shuvagata Hom got rid of Chris Gayle. Pollard and Russell showed a jugglery act in the boundary to send the Jamaican back. However, Rilee Rossouw and Mohammad Mithun took the bowlers by the scruff of their necks and cobbled together 121 runs off 72 deliveries to put Rangpur in the driver’s seat. Rossouw threatened to take the match away from Dhaka Dynamites.

The South African scored 83 from 44 balls with eight fours and four sixes. Debutant spinner Aliss Islam dismissed him and the dismissal changed the complexion of the encounter. Mithun pressed the accelerator to notch 49 from 35 balls, but Islam nipped him out. The tweaker then picked up Mortaza and Farhad Reza to pick up a hat-trick and a four-wicket haul. He also defended 14 runs in the last over.
