Twitter Reactions: England register another fantastic chase as Finch's ton goes in vain again
Twitter lauded Finch and Root alongside poking fun of Lyon’s ouster.
The Gabba crowd witnessed another splendid chase by the English team. While the target was comparatively lower this time around, the hosts managed to give a tough fight. However, it was England who had the last laugh as they steered their way to a sensational victory. The visitors now lead the series 2-nil.
Earlier, it was skipper Steve Smith who won the toss as Australia elected to bat first. Alex Carey was included in place of Tim Paine as the wicketkeeper. Adam Zampa was also dropped. As for England, they had an unchanged XI from their last game.
Australia were off to a good start as both the openers put up a 68-run partnership for the first wicket. While David Warner got out, Aaron Finch continued from where he left in the first game. The dashing opener went on to smash a brilliant hundred. However, he failed to find much support from the other batsmen.
Skipper Steve Smith and Travis Head were dismissed in quick succession. However, like the previous game, he and Mitchell Marsh built up a solid partnership of 85 runs for the fourth wicket. England managed to get a breakthrough in the form of Marsh. Finch followed him back to the pavilion soon.
Unlike the last game, Marcus Stoinis was dismissed cheaply and Australia were reduced from 209/3 to 216/6. A cameo by debutant Carey helped Australia cross 250. Cameron White also lend a helping hand though he batted really slow. The hosts put up a total of 270/9 in their quota of 50 overs.
As for England, Jason Roy was out in the very first over. From there on, Jonny Bairstow and Alex Hales combined for a brilliant 117-run partnership. As they threatened to take away the game from Australia, Jhye Richardson got both the wickets off consecutive overs.
While skipper Eoin Morgan failed to make much difference, Joe Root continued to bat well. He and Jos Buttler added 68 runs for the fifth wicket from just 60 balls as they rescued England from a possible situation of panic. The match continued to switch momentums as Starc struck back with two wickets in an over.
Chris Woakes was fantastic in the end as he and Root comfortably took England home. The visitors won by 4 wickets with more than 5 overs to spare. Starc was the pick amongst the Australian bowlers with four wickets. Twitter lauded Finch and Root alongside poking fun of Lyon’s ouster.
