Twitter Reactions: Evelyn Jones, bowlers power Birmingham Phoenix to the Eliminator
Lauren Winfield's 38-ball 64 with 11 fours weren't enough for the Superchargers to go beyond the first round.
Birmingham Phoenix have won three games in a row to make their way into the Eliminator of the Women’s Hundred. On Tuesday, August 17, the Amy Jones-led team defeated the Northern Superchargers by 14 runs at the Headingly in Leeds. The Superchargers, on the other hand, lost their fourth match in succession in the tournament and ended at sixth after being the table-toppers.
Evelyn Jones comes to the party
Shafali Verma got the Phoenix off to a flier as he smashed two fours off Kalea Moore. However, she holed out to Alice-Davidson Richards in the very next ball. Amy Jones came out with intent and scored an 11-ball 24 with six fours before Lauren Smith accounted for her wicket. Thereafter, opener Evelyn Jones and Katie Mack stitched together a crucial partnership of 57 runs for the third wicket.
Jones was the aggressor in the stand after she notched her half-century off 39 balls. The left-handed batter got out in the 95th ball but had scored a 47-ball 64 by then with six fours and three sixes. Erin Burns lent her the apt support, having scored an unbeaten 22-ball 28 with three fours. For the Superchargers, leg-spinner Katie Levick picked up two wickets. Smith was also hard to pounce on.
Phoenix make a comeback after a nervy start
The Superchargers lost their most in-form batter, Jemimah Rodrigues, for a single to start their run-chase. But skipper Lauren Winfield took the attack to the opposition and helped her team to 37 runs in the powerplay. The right-hander looked in ominous touch when he got to her fifty off 29 balls. Her partnership of 67 off 43 balls with Laura Wolvaardt set the tone for the Superchargers in the chase.
Winfield went on to score 64 off 38 with as many as 11 fours before Isabelle Wong cut short her stay in the middle. After her dismissal, the Superchargers’ innings fell apart. Having needed 43 runs off 31 balls, they couldn’t fetch a single boundary. Abtaha Maqsood delivered the body blow after she pinned Wolvaardt, who made 36. The middle and lower-order batters couldn’t show much resilience.
