Parthiv Patel played an inside out drive, the ball raced its way to the boundary and there he was pumping his fists in the air and so was Virat Kohli the man at the other end. The replacement wicketkeeper-batsman justified his comeback call-up that came his way after a long wait of 8 years. Team India was chasing 103 runs on the fourth day and despite losing his opening partner Murali Vijay for a naught Parthiv kept going and took the team home quite comfortably.

The day started with the Indian spinners looking for wickets having struck four times on the last evening, Kohli started with Ravindra Jadeja from one end and he got rid of the night watchman Gareth Batty soon in the morning. Jos Buttler walked out with positive intent and played his shots something he was brought in for but before he could cause significant damage was out caught in the deep off Jayant Yadav.

All this while there was Joe Root standing at one end and scoring his runs, he got to his fifty and finally found a good partner in young Haseeb Hameed who walked out to bat late having fractured his finger but the teenager showed immense determination and the duo built a resistive partnership denying the Indians any wickets.

After a lot of hard work Jadeja had Root but it wasn’t over yet, Chris Woakes scored a quick 30 and with Hameed extended the lead to around a 100 runs. Mohammad Shami got two wickets in an over, both off bouncers and the inning ended soon on 236. Hameed who had by then reached his half century was unbeaten on 59.

India’s chase started off quite poorly as Vijay was once again fell fending a short delivery from Chris Woakes for a duck. But Parthiv Patel was in no mood to let the English bowlers dominate and though the pacers focused on banging it in short, he played his shots along with Cheteshwar Pujara who also got the drive going whenever the ball was pitched up. The runs on the board weren’t enough to put the Indians under pressure and in the end, they got home with 8 wickets in hand.
