Comilla Victorians managed to thump Khulna Titans at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram by 80 runs courtesy of a superlative century from Evin Lewis, who returned from an injury. Moreover, they also moved to the top of the points table in this edition’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), dethroning the Chittagong Vikings. Meanwhile, the Titans’ horrendous run continued.

Lewis goes hammer and tongs

The Titans’ decision to bowl first after winning the toss didn’t quite work out as the Victorians racked up a colossal 237 for five in their 20 overs. The left-handed pair of Lewis and Tamim Iqbal took their team off to a brisk start courtesy of a stand of 58 runs from 44 balls. Mahmudullah struck first blood, dismissing Tamim for 25. In the very next ball, the Titans’ skipper nipper out Anamul Haque Bijoy.

Thereafter, Lewis and skipper Imrul Kayes took the bowling by the scruff of its neck and added 97 runs in 42 balls. Lewis also accomplished his century in 47 balls and remained not out on 109 from 49 with five boundaries and 10 over boundaries. Kayes got out for 39 from 21 balls. Shamshur Rahman added the much-needed impetus into the innings with a breezy knock of 28 from 15 balls with one four and a six.

Titans’ batting slump

Brendan Taylor and Junaid Siddique made sure that the Titans start their run-chase in a positive note with a stand of 55 runs from 33 balls. Junaid somewhat found it tough to time the leather and he fell prey to off-spinner Mahedi Hasan. Dawid Malan and Mahmudullah cleared the ropes a few times, but couldn’t carry on. Carlos Brathwaite made a comeback and notched an impressive 22 from 13 deliveries.

Wickets went down in clumps and the Titans’ couldn’t get themselves back into the contest. Taylor accomplished a gutsy half-century off 33 balls with five fours and a six. He was nipped out by Shahid Afridi. In the 19th over, Pakistani speedster Wahab Riaz picked up a hat-trick and he dismissed David Wiese, Taijul Islam and Saddam Hossain en route the achievement. The Titans were bowled out for 157.
