It wasn’t the best of finishes for Islamabad United, however, tey scraped through to the playoffs despite a huge loss against the Multan Sultans in the 29th match of the PSL 2022 edition. The Asif Ali-led side still have a lot of work to be done while it was an easy chase for the Multan Sultans who have been stupendous this season in the group games.

Earlier in the day, Islamabad United won the toss and opted to bat first at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore. Mohammad Huraira was undone early for just two runs by Asif Afridi while Nasir Nawaz and Liam Dawson got the innings going with some boundaries. However, Dawson was dismissed for an 11-ball 22 as the Islamabad side totally lost their way after his dismissal. Azam Khan, Asif Ali, Danish Aziz, Zafar Gohar were all dismissed without having an impact and played a lot of dots.

Imran Tahir bowled a brilliant four-over spell, picking up two wickets for just eight runs and Muhammad Musa’s 26 off 21 balls was vital in getting Islamabad over the 100 run mark. Asif Afridi finished with two wickets for just 21 runs to restrict the Islamabad side to 105 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs.

Mohammad Rizwan’s unbeaten half-century drives Multan Sultans over the line

In reply, Liam Dawson opened the bowling and immediately picked up three wickets in quick succession to leave the Multan Sultans 18/3. However, the asking rate was manageable and the need of the hour was the strike rotation for the Multan Sultans. The skipper Mohammad Rizwan did the job to perfection with an unbeaten 42 ball-51 and two fours and a six in his innings.

David Willey gave him good company from the other end with a well constructed 32-ball 28 to ensure that the Multan Sultans get over the line comfortably by six wickets and 2.4 overs left. With the win, the Multan Sultans ended their group stages campaign in a brilliant manner as they claimed 18 points in ten games to finish at the top.
