In the India’s historic 500th Test match, the visitors New Zealand hold the upper hand over India at stumps on Day 1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first. But he will not be happy with the scoreboard reading 291/9 at the end of days play.

India will have themselves to blame as they had thrown away quite some wickets to tumble down from 154/1 to 277/9. Former captains including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev were felicitated by the BCCI before the start of play.

Early on, KL Rahul was aggressive for his 32 and Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara scored half-centuries each to take the Indian total over 150. Pujara, especially, has been in a remarkable form off late, coming off scores of 166 and 256* in the Duleep Trophy. However, India slipped from 154 for 1 to 185 for 4 by the end of the second session.

New Zealand was more aggressive in the final session of play as they picked wickets at regular intervals as most of the Indian batsmen threw it away after settling in. Rohit Sharma looked good for his 35 but threw it away as he tried an unwanted lofted shot over mid-on.

With 291 runs and one wicket remaining, Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble will feel that they have missed out on an opportunity to score a huge total. Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav are the batsmen at the crease for Day 2. Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner and pacer Trent Boult claimed 3 wickets each. Neil Wagner, Mark Craig and Ish Sodhi bagged one wicket each at the end of day’s play.
