He walked out to take guard and hit the Sri Lankans like a torpedo. The intention was clear, hit, rattle, shatter, plunder and demolish the opposition. Rohit Sharma took a couple of deliveries to assess how the pitch was playing and what Angelo Mathews was trying to do. From the third ball that he slashed for a boundary through the backward point region, it was a carnage.

Another boundary on the fifth ball and it was a flying start already. Chameera in the fifth over bowled a slower one, short and down the leg-side, it sailed for a six, the first of the ten he would hit eventually in his knock. He was toying with the bowlers. Not the kind of game he usually displays as he likes to take his time and then go for the kill.

Today he was on the hunt upfront and soon we could sense a record was in line to be overhauled. Rohit was unstoppable, bowlers came into the attack one after the other from Fernando to Gunaratne and skipper Thisara Perera himself they all tried to stop him but in vain. He batted like a man possessed and the ball was just flying off his bat.

Whatever he touched in the air landed deep into the stands and when he decided just to time the ball, it was a beautiful sight of the ball racing to the fence. The fielders were mere spectators, they hardly got a chance to move when he even hit it on the grass.

On the 34th ball of his inning, he hit a boundary batting on 97 to get to his hundred which now equals him for the fastest hundred in T20I cricket with South Africa’s David Miller who took as many deliveries for his.

He kept going after the hundred as well and it seemed like the unthinkable could happen, Chris Gayle’s record 175* looked in danger but eventually on the 43rd ball, he was foxed on a slower delivery but not before scoring a magnificent 118 runs. He forced his way to 12 boundaries and ten sixes scoring with a stupendous strike rate of 124.

Twitterati went absolutely crazy and couldn’t praise Rohit enough, here are some of the best reactions:
