Saint Lucia Kings, on Sunday, September 5, strengthened their hold on the second spot in the 2021 edition of the CPL. The team, led by Faf du Plessis, beat the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by six wickets at the Warner Park. The Patriots, in the meantime, have lost back-to-back games.

Royal rips through the Patriots

After batting first, the Patriots could only manage 118 in 19.3 overs. Devon Thomas looked good for his 19-ball 28 before Kesrick Williams found his outside edge. Sherfane Rutherford and Asif Ali got starts, but none could go on to get a big score.

Fabian Allen tried to farm the strike and made a 32-ball 34 to take the Patriots past the 100-run mark. His knock was laced with two fours and three sixes. Jeavor Royal got two wickets for the Kings even as Samit Patel and Williams picked up two wickets each.

Chase carries the Kings

The run-chase didn’t start on a great note for the Kings as Allen removed Andre Fletcher for a golden duck. Du Plessis was starting to find his rhythm with a 15-ball 22 before he became Allen’s second victim. Keron Cottoy made a run-a-ball 19 to keep the Kings going.

However, Roston Chase’s third fifty on the trot sealed the deal for the Kings. On Sunday, he stayed unbeaten on 51 off 38 with four fours and two sixes. Tim David’s cameo of 18 off seven helped the Kings chase the target down with as many as 26 balls to spare.

We get out too easy: Chris Gayle

After the Patriots’ second loss on the trot, Chris Gayle was disappointed, but hoped for his team to get back to winning ways. Roston Chase, who got the Player of the Match award, said that the track got better to bat in the second half of the game.

“Very disappointed. The guys got a chance to bat deep but didn’t. We get out too easy and it’s something to reflect on very quickly – we have got two days off, so need to reflect. Hopefully these two games give us a bit of a kick and hopefully we can get back to winning again.

“A bit of complacence maybe – the guys with a low total to defend, may think it will get over quickly,” Gayle said after the match.

“Today was an easier task at hand. Run-rate wasn’t high. Mentality was to knock it around. Got a chance as well so that helped too. Pitch was getting better, lot easier to bat on,” Chase was quoted as saying after the match.
