Twitter trolls Shahid Afridi for 'Indian team got lucky' tweet over his poor performances against India in WCs
Afridi faced India on four occasions in 50-over World Cups and disappointed every time.
Shahid Afridi is one of the best all-rounders Pakistan has ever produced, and despite retiring from the international arena, he is still playing in the T20 leagues. He was known for his explosive batting and tidy leg-spin bowling during his illustrious career. The all-rounder also had an excellent record against the arch-rivals India scoring one of the fastest centuries in the ODI format pummelling their bowling.
But come the World Cup, Afridi could never live up to the expectations while facing the Men in Blue. Pakistan has never managed to beat in the mega-events in 12 attempts, including the T20 World Cup clashes. Despite having a good overall record in the ODIs, the Men in Green have failed to cross the hurdle in the WCs every time they faced India.
To add to their woes, Shahid Afridi, their gun all-rounder, never performed well, and during a Q&A session on Twitter, a fan questioned him about the same. The fan asked the reason for his poor show against India in World Cups, pointing out that he scored only 56 runs and picked only a solitary wicket in 5 matches.
Responding to this, the 40-year-old stated that team India only got lucky on those occasions. “I think Indian team was lucky,” he wrote in his reply only to leave the fans on this side of the border bemused.
Here’s the convo:
Shahid Afridi played four matches against India in World Cup
The fan seemed to be speaking about Shahid Afridi’s performances against India in the 50-over World Cups. He first faced the neighbours donning the Pakistan jersey in the mega ICC event back in 1999, where he managed to score only five runs as an opener. In the 2003 World Cup, Afridi scored only nine runs and picked up a solitary wicket.
The all-rounder was the captain when India and Pakistan face-off in the much-anticipated semi-final of the 2011 World Cup in Mohali. But the leader of the pack couldn’t lead from the front and went wicket-less with the ball while mustering only 19 runs off 17 balls in the chase. Four years later, in 2015, Shahid Afridi disappointed yet again with the ball but managed his top score against India in WCs, mustering 22 runs.
Meanwhile, his tweet stating that the opposition team was only lucky in those matches didn’t go down well with the Indian fans, and they hilariously trolled him for the same.
