Twitterati not happy with the selectors for ignoring Rohit Sharma in Tests despite Asia Cup triumph
India won the Asia Cup on Friday under his captaincy.
Although the writing was very much on the wall, Rohit Sharma’s impeccable run as the India captain in the just concluded Asia Cup revived his fans’ expectations of his inclusion in the squad for the two-match Test series against the Windies next month. However, their hope was shattered as the national selectors did not consider giving his Test career a fresh pump and they went on to pick new openers.
Rohit led India to their seventh Asia Cup title on Friday, defeating Bangladesh in a closely fought final and the Men in Blue finished with an all-win record under the 31-year-old’s captaincy. Not only Rohit excelled as a batsman in the tournament (one hundred; two fifties) but his captaincy was also praised. India dominated arch-rivals Pakistan on both the occasions and all these factors strengthened the claim of Rohit’s return to the Test arena once again.
By ignoring Rohit, selectors gave the message
But by ignoring the batsman yet again, the selectors showed that they are not thinking about momentary gains. Rohit Sharma’s last appearance in Test was in South Africa in January and there, he was picked even ahead of Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. But his poor batting saw him getting discarded and neither did he feature in India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan (where Karun Nair took his place) nor for the Test series in England.
In fact, Rohit has not been considered for any junior side for the longer format either, making the signals easy to read. He started his Test career with a bang, slamming two centuries in as many innings against the Windies at home in 2013. Five years since the dream debut, the Hitman is nowhere near the Test orbit and even an emphatic success as a captain on the international stage is not enough to bring him back in favour.
Twitterati was livid with the selectors for ignoring the stand-in Indian limited-overs captain and lashed out at them over the same.
Here is what the Twitter had to say about the selectors ignoring Rohit:
