Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav, in a recent interview, claimed that fitness for a bowler is as good as oil for an engine which holds the body together. The Kolkata Knight Rider also stated that he wanted to change the notion of spinners dominating in the Asian conditions.

Yadav, who had brilliant run at the Grand Home Season of Test cricket, earned praises for his fitness from the entire cricketing fraternity as he remained available throughout the thirteen matches in the season. Apart from the first two games, he also featured in all the matches for his franchise in the recent season of the IPL.

Following the IPL, he took the flight to London to take part in the ICC Champions Trophy and subsequently in the West Indies tour. He now part of the Indian line up in the ongoing series in Sri Lanka. “It was easy at the start because there weren’t too many matches and I didn’t play too many Tests. But as I started playing more, that is when I realised the importance of fitness. Also, it was important to follow the schedule and the training routine,” claimed Umesh Yadav according to an interview with BCCI.tv.

“If you don’t work on the recovery aspect, then it becomes very difficult as u can survive for a while, but after that, your back starts becoming stiff, then your shoulder, hamstring and glute power. The body might be naturally strong, but if you don’t strengthen it, it starts collapsing after a point of time,” further added the Vidarbha Express.

“So, as a fast bowler, whenever I get an opportunity, I work on recovery and strengthening myself. I know it is a must for me if I have to stay for long. Just like the engine needs oil, I need to train. If I don’t do that, I won’t be able to go the distance,” stated Yadav stressing the importance of fitness for bowlers

Umesh Yadav on dominating in Asian conditions

He signed off by revealing his aim to change the notion of sub continental pitches being graveyards for Pacers.”I had always heard that spinner dominate in Asian conditions and I knew the last season was my opportunity to change that. We as a bowling unit wanted to prove that we can make the impact required to change the mindset of the people,” concluded Yadav.
