Virat Kohli lauds Indian team for SAFF Cup win on Twitter
Indian national football team captain Sunil Chhetri has been in the spotlight after he netted a match winner against Afghanistan in the SAFF Cup and has received praises for his heroics on Sunday. One famous personality who praised Chhetri for his achievements was India Test captain, Virat Kohli.
Sunil Chhetri scored one of the most important goals of his career when his 101st-minute strike snatched an unlikely win for India in the final of the SAFF Suzuki Cup football tournament against Afghanistan on Sunday at Thiruvananthapuram. His 50th goal for the national side saw India edge out higher-ranked Afghanistan 2-1 in the final and lift the trophy for the seventh time, and after a gap of four years.
Virat Kohli is well known for his love for football. He co-owns Indian Super League side FC Goa and is a Real Madrid fan. He took to Twitter to congratulate the national team for winning their 7th SAFF Cup and also called Chhetri’s winner “mind-blowing”.
On his part, Sunil Chhetri thanked him for the praise and joked that the cricket team will not need ‘extra time’ to win in Australia.
Chettri cashed in on some poor defending by the Afghans to squeeze the ball into the net past goalkeeper Azizi in the 11th minute of extra-time. The Afghans pressed hard for the winner after netting the first goal in the 70th minute, putting the Indians under severe pressure. Jeje Lalpekhlua then equalized the scoreline just two minutes later to get India shoulder to shoulder with the Afghans. The Indians then withstood a barrage of attacks but the defenders put up a good show to restrict the Afghans.
