He was one of India’s most stylish batsmen and warrior of many historic battles on the 22 yards. VVS Laxman turned 44 on November 1 and he was in for a big surprise. The wristy Hyderabadi batsman acknowledged the pleasant surprise that he received on the occasion, taking to Twitter, confirming the attachment he still shares with the country’s national cricketers.

Laxman, one of India’s ‘Famous Five’ batsmen a generation ago, scored an epic 281 against a mighty Australian attack in Kolkata in 2001 that saw India winning despite following on and catapulted the bowlers to the list of great batsmen that India have produced. Laxman has played 134 Tests and 86 ODIs in a career that spanned over 16 years, scoring over 11,000 international runs with 23 hundreds.

On Wednesday, Laxman’s wife Shailaja organised a party in his honour which surprised the ex-cricketer and even members of Team India took out time to be present on the occasion. Laxman tweeted a photo of his and his family with players like Kedar Jadhav, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and others and thanked all those who greeted him on his birthday.

Captain Virat Kohli was, however, not seen in the tweet which was liked over 6,200 times, prompting a number of social users to ask the ace batsman’s absence.

Laxman’s former Team India colleague Virender Sehwag also wished Laxman on the eve of his birthday. Living up to his reputation of coming up with unique tweets, Sehwag called Laxman a “kalaai jaadugar” (wrist magician) for the latter’s wristy touch as a batsman and added that his wrists are worth preservation and having insurance.

Laxman is currently the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad, one of the franchises in the Indian Premier League, who also chips in with his analysis on the game. Laxman was also tagged as “Very, Very Special” by Australian legend Ian Chappell for his consistent play Down Under during the 2003-04 series.
