The Fiji U19 made their debut in the 2016 edition of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup. Brimming with optimism after being drawn into group C, Fiji’s first match was against the mighty England. The optimism, however, was crushed with a strong arm as the hapless Fiji were thrashed out of sight. However, in spite of the massive 299 run loss to a rather seasoned English side, Fiji gave most cricketing fans something to remember and cherish.

The New Zealand rugby side aka the All Blacks are famous for ‘The Haka’. The Haka, originally performed by the Maoris before going into battle has now become a significant part of Rugby folklore. Rumor has it that nearly half the match is won by the All Blacks while performing the Haka, striking fear into the opposition.

On a similar note, the Fiji U19 side, led by their charismatic skipper Saimoni Tuitoga, performed a dance in the dressing room before taking the field against England.

The dance, which was incidentally a part of the warm-up routine, saw the Fiji players get into a baseball batting stance. What followed appeared to be similar to the severing of a head, quite similar to a samurai stance. The end, similar to the Haka, ended with an aggressive leap forward.

The ferocious activity, however, failed to arouse the Fiji side as they were trashed quite comprehensively by England. A 299 run saw opener Dan Lawrence smash a wonderful 174. Peni Volavola Vuniwaqa waged a lone battle against the England bowlers with a fighting knock of 36 thus delaying the England victory by 10 overs. England eventually picked up the win as the hapless Fiji were bowled out for a poultry 72 off 27.3 overs.
