Watch: Hardik Pandya's exhilarating last over against Bangladesh
It was a do-or-die sort of condition for India when they went head to head against Bangladesh at the M. Chinnaswamy. India batted first and set a target of 147 runs target for Bangladesh to chase. The Bangla Tigers after losing and early wickets, began to plunder the Indian bowler, courtesy to Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar. Both looked unstoppable until the Indian spinner intervened and changed the course of the match. Indian bowlers did not lose give up and tried their best.
The match was hanging in both teams favor with Bangladesh requiring 27 from the last 18 balls. Ashish Nehra bowled an effective 18th over, giving away 10 runs but importantly picking up the wicket of Soumya Sarkar. Bumrah, who had a very unlucky day today, then bowled a superb penultimate over where he gave just 6 runs to keep the equation at 11 off the last six balls. This was the match changing over.
MS Dhoni then turned to Hardik Pandya for the last bowler. Pandya looked eased. A smile quickly appeared on his face as soon as he realised he will be the man on whom everyone will have their hopeful eyes glued on for next six balls. He wasn’t nervous at all.
Ashish Nehra, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya had sort of mini-meeting. The momentum was with Bangladesh with the well set Mahmudullah at strike and Mushfiqur Rahim at the non-striker end.
The next six ball then turned out to be the most dramatic of the match. The 1st ball was ticked for a single by Mahmudullah. Mushfiqur then smacked a slower ball through covers to make the Indian fans nervous. Mushfiqure then scooped the 3rd ball which narrowly managed to sneak past MS Dhoni and ran away for a four.
But, after the first three ball, which belonged to the Bangladeshis, the match turned head over heels, literally. Mahumudullah went for the winning stroke but could not clear the boundary line and was caught by Dhawan at deep mid wicket. Dhoni, Nehra and Hardik Pandya again grouped and had a lengthy discussion as Shuvagata Home walked in.
The words from the seniors worked in a great way as Pandya unpicked Rahim off the next ball. Rahim too committed the same fatal error of attempting a big shot to finish the game and was caught by the electric Ravindra Jadeja at deep mid-wicket.
MS Dhoni fully prepared, standing with only one glove in his hand and keeping the right hand free in order to throw the ball. Pandya came in and pitched it wide and short. Hom swung but missed it as the ball went straight to the Dhoni who sprinted like Usain Bolt in him and ran out Mustafizur Rahman to seal the match in India’s favor.
