Watch: Mitchell Santner’s magical effort prevents a six: Mitchell Santner was the talk of the town during the recently concluded Test match. Day 5 of the New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test match witnessed some terrific fielding as New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner pulled off a stunning piece fielding on the boundary on day five of the first Test against Sri Lanka to deny Suranga Lakmal what looked like a certain maximum.

Santner, playing his second Test match flicked the ball back into the field of play with his left hand before hitting the turf. There was no team-mate within range to grab the return catch, but the all-rounders acrobatic skills were appreciated.

New Zealand had their opponents on the ropes at 268-9 chasing 405 to win on the final day when a Doug Bracewell delivery was knocked near out of the park by the no.10 batsman Suranga Lakmal. Even though the effort had little to do with the final results, as New Zealand comfortably thrashed Sri Lanka by 122 runs but the superb effort was the talk of the day.

Recently, Former New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram heaped praise on the youngster, before the young talent made his debut against Australia in the historic pink ball Test match.

We saw with young Santner in Adelaide that he has got huge skill with both bat and ball,” said Oram, who played 33 tests, scoring five test centuries and claiming 60 wickets.

“It was a big ask to debut in such a high-profile test, but I think he came through it really well. He is a spin bowling allrounder but he gives you that balance with both bat and ball. What I saw out of his batting was really positive.”

Oram, the bowling coach for the Central Stags, first saw Santner last year when the Stags played the Knights  and Santner scored a truckload of runs in the domestic competition.

“I saw a guy last year with immense skill, but it is a huge step up to test cricket and he has made that step up very well. It all bodes really well for the future.” he added.
