Watch: Ryan Harris hits a last ball six to win the game for his state side: Ryan Harris or Rhino as he is fondly called by his teammates and fans has won many matches for his country and his stateside but you wouldn’t quite associate him with winning a game with the bat. On 13th December 2006 though, in the Ford One Day cup game between, South Australia and Queensland, South Australia found an unlikely batting hero in the form of Ryan Harris.
Queensland had posted a competitive 268 in their 50 overs against a bowling attack that featured Jason Gillespie, Shaun Tait and Ryan Harris. South Australia’s top order put them in a good position with a century from Australia discard Matthew Elliot and a fifty from Darren Lehmann in the middle order.
Elliot and Lehmann both departed in successive overs i.e. 46th and 47th overs respectively and South Australia still needed 20 runs in 3 overs with 5 wickets in hand. More drama unfolded in the last over as Graham Manou the last recognized batsman was run out with 6 more to get and two balls remaining in the game.
Manou’s dismissal brought Jason Gillespie to the crease, who had recently hit a double century against Bangladesh in what was his last Test. Gillespie though, took a single and gave the strike to Ryan Harris who hit the last ball of the game against the part-time spin bowling of Lachlan Stevens for a huge six and registered a famous victory for South Australia.
