3. Herschelle Gibbs drops the 1999 World cup
South Africa met Australia in a Super six encounter in 1999 World Cup and scored 272 batting first. Australia collapsed to 72/4 and in walked captain Steve Waugh, who started to take the game away from the South Africans. He hit a Steve Elworthy delivery towards mid-on, where Herschelle Gibbs in eagerness of throwing the ball in the air, didn’t properly grasped the ball and dropped a sitter of a catch.
It has been said that Steve Waugh responded by saying “Mate, How does it feel to drop the World Cup, Herschelle?”. The drop proved to be costly one as Waugh guided Australia to victory with an unbeaten 120. Australia then met South Africa again in the semi-final of the World Cup, where they tied the game and South Africa went out of the World Cup on basis of the previous loss.
