We don't own a house as yet, will buy one with my IPL salary: MI’s Tilak Varma
MI have unearthed many gems over the years and Tilak Varma has now joined that list.
All Tilak Varma took is a couple of innings to make a name for himself in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Mumbai Indians bought the southpaw for INR 1.7 crore in the auction and the youngster is repaying the faith of the team management. Although Mumbai Indians have lost their first two games, Tilak impressed one and all with scores of 22 and 61. Moreover, he scored these runs at an astonishing combined strike rate of 173.
From Jasprit Bumrah to Hardik Pandya, MI have unearthed many gems over the years and Tilak has now joined that list. Meanwhile, the southpaw’s journey to glory hasn’t been easy by any means. Hailing from Hyderabad, the 19-year-old belongs to a humble background and rose to the top with some astonishing performances at junior-level cricket.
Growing up, we’ve had a lot of financial difficulties: Tilak Varma
While he was a part of India’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, the youngster couldn’t set the tournament on fire. Nonetheless, his heroics in the domestic circuit earned him a lucrative IPL contract. Recalling his financial challenges, Varma said he now aims to buy a house for his family.
“Growing up, we’ve had a lot of financial difficulties. My father with his meagre salary had to look after my cricket expenses as well as my elder brother’s studies. In the last few years, with some sponsorship and match fees, I could just about take care of my cricketing expenses,” Varma was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“We don’t own a house as yet. So with whatever I have earned in this IPL, my only aim is to get a house for my parents. This IPL money gives me the luxury to play freely for the rest of my career,” he added. Meanwhile, Varma also revealed how his family members and coach got emotional while seeing his bidding in the mega auction.
“The day the IPL auction was going on, I was on a video call with my coach. My coach started tearing up when the bids kept going higher. After I was picked, I called up my parents. They too started crying over the call. My mother was struggling to get words out,” he added.
