'What a legend' - Meme fest ignited on Twitter as as Aaron Finch signs with ninth IPL team
Before KKR, Finch represented eight teams since his IPL debut in 2010.
Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch has been roped in by Kolkata Knight Riders following the ouster of Alex Hales. The England opener, who was bought for INR 1.5 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction, pulled out of the gala competition citing bio-bubble fatigue. Subsequently, KKR got Finch on board as his replacement and the same ignited a meme fest on social media.
Notably, Finch is set to become the first cricketer to play for nine different IPL teams. Besides 2019 and the 2021 season, the Aussie dasher has featured in every IPL edition after making his debut in the competition in 2010. Hot and cold performances meant Finch didn’t spend substantial time at any franchise. However, his T20 record and reputation earned him contracts on regular basis.
Aaron Finch has blown hot and cold in IPL
Before KKR, Finch has represented eight teams namely Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), now-defunct Pune Warriors India, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, now-defunct Gujurat Lions, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and, most recently in 2020, Royal Challengers Bangalore. He boasts of a modest record in IPL, having scored 2005 runs in 87 matches at an average of 25.70 and a strike rate of 127.70, including 14 half-centuries.
While Finch registered his name for this season’s mega auction, he didn’t get any buyers. However, Hales’ withdrawal meant the 35-year-old will now serve Kolkata Knight Riders. He’ll join forces with skipper Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer in the top order and it would be interesting to see how the season pans out for him.
Meanwhile, KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed his delight after getting the T20 World Cup-winning captain on board. “We are delighted to welcome Aaron Finch, the T20 World Cup-winning captain, to the Knight Riders family. He is excited about joining the rest of the KKR squad in Mumbai and we look forward to benefiting from his vast experience,” he said in a press release. Meanwhile, IPL 2022 will get underway on March 26 and KKR, who finished as runners up last season, will fight for their third title.
