Women's World Cup 2022: Jhulan Goswami equals Lyn Fulltston's record for most wickets in tournament history
Goswami went through the defences of New Zealand's Katey Martin to bag her 39th wicket in Women's World Cup history.
India’s veteran bowler Jhulan Goswami has achieved yet another landmark as she equalled the world record for the most wickets at Women’s World Cups. Lyn Fulltston from Australia had held the record previously with 39 wickets at World Cups while Carole Hedges (37), Clare Taylor (36) and Cathryn Fitzpatrick (33) follow her on the list.
Goswami attained the massive feat by going through the defences of New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batter Katey Martin during Women’s World Cup 2022. The right-arm seamer bowled nine overs and was quite economical, conceding just 41 runs including a maiden. Goswami went through an excellent spell of bowling against Pakistan in the previous game where she picked up two wickets for 26 runs in her 10 overs.
Goswami, having made her debut in 2002, has been around for a long time and is the highest wicket-taker in women’s cricket as well. She held the number one position among bowlers in ICC rankings for a considerable period of time and so far has picked up 247 wickets in 197 ODIs at an average of 21.7. The 39-year-old has been proving that age is just a number and would be looking to continue her impressive run.
India restricts New Zealand to 260
After a thumping win a few days back against Pakistan, India came out with a positive mindset in their second game of the Women’s World Cup 2022 against the white ferns. Amy Satterthwaite (75) and Amelia Kerr (50) scored half-centuries while contributions from Sophie Devine, Maddy Green and Martin ensured that the New Zealand side went past the 250 run mark. Pooja Vastrakar had a splendid show with the ball this time after picking up four wickets for 34 runs in her outstanding spell and kept the score intact in the death overs especially.
However, India chasing 261 to win are already on the back foot having lost two important wickets of Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma and the onus will be on skipper Mithali Raj to take the side home.
