World T20 2016 Super 10 stage Combined XI

The Super 10 stage of the World T20 2016 saw exciting contests between teams. It began with South Africa, England getting indulged in a run fest and concluded with a low scoring dead rubber between South Africa and Sri Lanka. The league stages split into Group 1 and Group 2 saw New Zealand, England, West Indies and India qualify for the knockouts. While New Zealand and West Indies had a smooth ride after topping their respective groups, England and India had to grind a bit to make it through. The league stages also saw some exhilarating individual performers who outshined their counterparts by a margin. Therefore, we thought it would be interesting to see a combined XI of the players who were outstanding for their team in the league stage. Martin Guptill: (Photo Source: Twitter) Martin Guptill carried his great batting form into the World T20 and did well as an opener for New Zealand. He began slowly with scores of 16 and 9 in his first two matches against England and India. He gave a blazing start to his team against their rivals Australia with a 27-ball 37-run knock. And, finally, he showed his true colors against Pakistan in Mohali with a thunderous 48-ball 80 runs inning in the final league game. Quinton has a special liking for Indian conditions and thrives here very well. He began his campaign with a 24-ball 52 run blitz against England on a batting paradise in a high scoring game. He continued his good run and added two more 30 plus knocks to his tally and ended as South Africa’s highest run-getter with 153 runs from four matches at an average of 38.25, striking at a rate of around 143. India’s Mr. Dependable has been in roaring form in the shortest version of the game and has won games for Indian almost single-handedly on a couple of occasions. Kohli has 184 runs at a mind-blowing average of 92 with a strike rate of 132.37. He is a beast while chasing targets and his average of 123 in successful run chases is simply astonishing. His knocks against Pakistan and Australia made the whole cricketing fraternity rave about him endlessly. (Photo by Pal Pillai/IDI via Getty Images) Joe Root’s 168 runs in four matches at a strike-rate of 150 makes him England’s best batsman so far in the World T20. He lies second to Virat Kohli as the highest run-getter in the league stages. Root has been a consistent performer across all formats for his team. The 25-year old’s best knock came against the South Africa in Mumbai where he spearhead the world record chase against South Africa with his fabulous knock of 83 off just 44 balls. He received surprise call-up to play against India in the homes series prior to the World T20. He justified his selection and travelled to India for the World T20. His team, unfortunately, could not make it past the Super 10 stages but he did well in both departments. Watto made 96 runs off the bat and 5 wickets with the ball in the four games he played before retiring from international cricket with the final league game against India. MS Dhoni (C & wk): MS Dhoni. (© Getty Images) Captain Cool MS Dhoni has been wonderful in the tournament till now. Dhoni’s usual competitive streak was clearly evident in the World T20 as well. He led his side brilliantly. His captaincy tactics have been outstanding. Dhoni also took responsibility of finishing the games for his team with the bat. His wicketkeeping can be rated above his batting and leadership simply for the stunning stumpings and run outs he has executed in the tournament thus far. (Photo by Christopher Lee-IDI/IDI via Getty Images) The Afghanistan team, despite losing three out of four games, had a wonderful World T20. The whole unit did well but in parts. One of their top performers was the efficient all-rounder Mohammad Nabi. Nabi was the man with the ‘Golden Arm’ in the Afghan team. He would chip in with highly important wickets in the middle over and also block the run flow. With the bat, he would hammer those valuable runs during the final over of the innings propelling the team score to decent levels. (Photo by PUNIT PARANJPE/AFP/Getty Images) Samuel Badree is a proven performer in the shortest format of the game and is the leading bowler in this format. He has a deceptive style and can be used in the powerplays as well as in the death overs. He keeps the batsman guessing with his subtle variations of pace and fast googlies. He has so far taken 6 wickets in four games with a highly impressive average of 5.46. Badree, on his day, can decimate the opposition batting order on his own. His bowling figures of 3/12 and 3/14 against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan further enhance his reputation. (Photo by Christopher Lee-IDI/IDI via Getty Images) Mitchell Santner has been New Zealand’s surprise weapon in the World T20 tournament so far. Most of the credit for New Zealand’s clean sheet record in the Super 10 stage goes to the left-arm spinner who has relished bowling in the sub-continental conditions. Santner began his journey with nullifying the dangerous Indian batting order by claiming figures of 4/11, enabling the Kiwis register a stunning win over the hosts. He continued his great run and went on to pick 2/30, 2/29 and 1/16 against Australia, Pakistan and Bangladesh respectively finishing with 9 wickets from 4 games. He is a genuine wicket taker who has had every batsman baffled with his cutters. Although Bangladesh ended the tournament without a single win, Mustafizur’s performance did not go down at all. He played only 3 games in the league stages but still claimed 9 wickets. He was a tad expensive against Australia and India but picked wickets and registered figures of 2/30 and 2/34 respectively. Mustafizur gave his best performance against New Zealand against as he snapped up his career-best tally of 5/22. Nehra has performed wonderfully ever since he made his return to the Indian team at the age of 36 during Australia’s tour ahead of the World T20. MS Dhoni desperately needed a bowler who could give him wickets in the powerplays and Nehra has fulfilled that role in the team. Four wickets in four games is not an extraordinary number but his tight miserly spells at the start of the inning opens the gates for other bowlers to come in and take advantage and has also dammed the run flow in the death overs which in the end ensured India the success.
