5 Cricketers who were arrested during IPL due to various reasons

Since its inception, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed several controversies. Right from the ‘slapping gate’ to ‘match-fixing allegations’, the league has seen it all. However, there were also instances where reputed cricketers actually ended up being behind the bars. From various different reasons, these players were arrested by the police. The news of these arrests shook the entire country as well as fanatics all around the world. A few of them were arrested for match-fixing allegations and others were arrested for involving in betting during the cash-rich league. Here are 5 instances when cricketers were arrested by the police for their wrongdoings 1. S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila. (Photo Source: Twitter) In May 2013, a series of arrests by a special unit of Delhi Police took the entire nation by a shocker. India’s pacer S Sreesanth who was also a part of the World Cup 2011 winning squad, along with two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates for sent into police custody for five days. After Delhi Police’s probe into IPL spot-fixing, it was confirmed by them that these three were the defaulters. Sreesanth was arrested from a friend’s place in Mumbai. Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were picked up from a Delhi hotel. It was revealed back then that they were linked to an INR 40,000 crore spot-fixing scam. It was alleged that Sreesanth did some stretching exercises to signal to the bookies that he’d concede runs in that particular over. Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were said to be spot-fixing for INR 60 lakhs per over. Even though he conceded the runs, Chandila didn’t signal and it was said that he was asked to return the money. This created a huge uproar in the nation about the integrity of the league. The charges against these three players were dropped in 2015. 2. Rahul Sharma and Wayne Parnell In May 2012, leg-spinner Rahul Sharma and South Africa pacer Wayne Parnell were booked for a drug abuse case. Both these players, who represented the Pune Warriors in that season, were rounded up after a raid on a suburban hotel in Mumbai. It was alleged that drugs were being consumed in the hotel. A 1200-page charge sheet was filed against 86 persons who were present at that party. Wayne Parnell, one of the foreigners at that party, was shown as a wanted accused in the charge sheet. Both these cricketers, however, claimed innocent. Rahul Sharma said that he was attending a birthday party along with the left-arm pacer. Parnell, on the other hand, noted that they were only drinking and dancing. He added that it was simply a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Later, it was confirmed that both the players were among the 42 who were tested positive for the drugs. 3. Luke Pomersbach Luke Pomersbach. (Photo Source: Twitter) At around the same time when the Rahul Sharma-Wayne Parnell incident took place, another shocking news hit the IPL. This time, it was another overseas player who was arrested by the police. RCB’s foreign recruit Luke Pomersbach was alleged of molesting a US Woman. Furthermore, it was revealed that he even beat up her boyfriend at Delhi five-star hotel, the Maurya Sheraton. After a game between the Delhi Daredevils and the Royal Challengers Bangalore, this incident is said to have taken place. A case was registered against the Australian cricketer under IPC sections 354 (outraging modesty of a woman), 323 (hurt), 454 (lurking house-trespass) and 511 (Punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonments). Also, when produced before the court, Pomersbach fainted. However, these charges were later lifted after both the parties had an out of court settlement. The cricketer didn’t play in any other games for RCB that season. 4. Tushar Arothe Tushar Arothe. (Photo Source: Twitter) Tushar Arothe, a former first-class cricketer from Baroda, also had to go behind the bars. He represented the Baroda team for nearly 19 years before 1985/86 and 2003/04 seasons. Arothe was the first player to play over 100 first-class games for Baroda. Post his retirement, he took up coaching and was the head coach of the Indian Women’s Cricket team between 2017 and 2018. Allegedly, a fallout between him and some of the senior players saw him removed from the job. In 2019, Tushar and 18 others were arrested by Baroda Police on betting the IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab. Arothe was arrested by the police for this illegal activity before he was released on bail. However, the former all-rounder denied all such charges. He claimed to be innocent and said he’d never indulge in such activities. 5. Nayan Shah Nayan Shah. (Photo Source: Twitter) In 2017, a young cricketer from Maharastra was arrested for betting during the IPL. Kanpur police identified a connection between the U19 cricketer and a betting racket. It was alleged that Nayan took INR 15 lakhs as an advance for revealing information about the pitch. Photographs of the Mumbai pitch were recovered from his phone and it was said that he had a contract for the entire IPL tournament. In Kanpur, Shah hired a man named Ramesh Kumar. He was employed at Green Park and was given INR 5,000 to put excess water on the pitch and make it slow. Tampering the pitch, sending the information to bookies all around the country and taking money for the same was the modus operandi. Back then, it was also suspected that Nayan might have tried to get in contact with some of the players as well.
