In 2017, a young cricketer from Maharastra was arrested for betting during the IPL. Kanpur police identified a connection between the U19 cricketer and a betting racket. It was alleged that Nayan took INR 15 lakhs as an advance for revealing information about the pitch.

Photographs of the Mumbai pitch were recovered from his phone and it was said that he had a contract for the entire IPL tournament. In Kanpur, Shah hired a man named Ramesh Kumar. He was employed at Green Park and was given INR 5,000 to put excess water on the pitch and make it slow.

Tampering the pitch, sending the information to bookies all around the country and taking money for the same was the modus operandi. Back then, it was also suspected that Nayan might have tried to get in contact with some of the players as well.
