Since its inception, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed several controversies. Right from the ‘slapping gate’ to ‘match-fixing allegations’, the league has seen it all. However, there were also instances where reputed cricketers actually ended up being behind the bars.

From various different reasons, these players were arrested by the police. The news of these arrests shook the entire country as well as fanatics all around the world. A few of them were arrested for match-fixing allegations and others were arrested for involving in betting during the cash-rich league.

1. S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila

In May 2013, a series of arrests by a special unit of Delhi Police took the entire nation by a shocker. India’s pacer S Sreesanth who was also a part of the World Cup 2011 winning squad, along with two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates for sent into police custody for five days. After Delhi Police’s probe into IPL spot-fixing, it was confirmed by them that these three were the defaulters.

Sreesanth was arrested from a friend’s place in Mumbai. Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were picked up from a Delhi hotel. It was revealed back then that they were linked to an INR 40,000 crore spot-fixing scam. It was alleged that Sreesanth did some stretching exercises to signal to the bookies that he’d concede runs in that particular over.

Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were said to be spot-fixing for INR 60 lakhs per over. Even though he conceded the runs, Chandila didn’t signal and it was said that he was asked to return the money. This created a huge uproar in the nation about the integrity of the league. The charges against these three players were dropped in 2015.
