Australia vs India: Prithvi Shaw rushed to hospital after an injury scare in the warm-up game
The 19-year old made an impressive debut against Windies to seal a spot for the series against Australia.
The openers play a vital role especially in Test matches as they set the tone by negating the new ball and set a solid base for the others to capitalize. The Indian Test team has had a couple of issues over the opening combination in recent years. Teenage prodigy Prithvi Shaw who has been impressive over the last few months seems to be the answer to India’s problems at the top.
Unlike in South Africa and England, India opted for tour games ahead of the big Test series in Australia. Shaw, who was fielding at the deep mid-wicket fence caught CA XI opener Max Bryant just inside the rope and fell over while trying to keep the ball in play as momentum carried him beyond.
In this process, he twisted his left ankle and was in a lot of pain which was evident from the fact that he wasn’t able to put any pressure on his left leg. India physio Patrick Farhat rushed to attend him and he was taken to the hospital for scans.
A major setback
Shaw’s injury can be a major setback for India as he is an integral part of the Test team. The flamboyant opener had earlier scored a quick fire 66 which all but confirmed his spot in the playing XI for the first Test. Earlier, batting coach Sanjay Bangar had said that only one of the two opening slots are up for grabs meaning that the team has to decide between KL Rahul and Murali Vijay. If the scans reveal a serious injury, India will have to call Mayank Agarwal or Shikhar Dhawan as his replacement.
India drew the 3-match T20I series against Australia and are expected to put up a strong performance in the Test series. Kohli and his men are working hard to get create history in the island continent. This is a golden opportunity for India to win a series Down Under as the Australian team is missing David Warner and Steve Smith who are serving their suspensions.
