IPL 2023: 5 players who underperformed in IPL 2022 but went for big bucks in auction
Despite their dismal outings in the last installment of the league, they got picked up by the franchises at a colossal amount.
2. Mayank Agarwal
Mayank Agarwal is known for his fierce batting style as an opener. Appearing for Punjab Kings (PBKS) from 2018-2022, he delivered some incredible match-winning knocks to the franchise. Last year, the PBKS team management provided him with the captaincy mantle after retaining him for the 2022 season. Playing the role of a skipper in the tournament, he delivered below-par displays as a skipper and batter.
As a captain, the 31-year-old couldn’t take his team to the playoffs round. The matter got worse when he couldn’t rack up runs with his bat. Scoring only 196 runs in 13 IPL matches at a terrible strike rate of 122.50, he failed to find himself among runs. At the IPL auction 2023, he was one of the favourite players to crack a fine deal and the same happened when his name was announced by the auctioneer.
Considering his vast IPL experience and batting potential, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) purchased him at INR 8.25 crore. The franchise also had a bidding war with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) to get his services for the next edition.
