IPL 2024: 5 retained players who lost their place in playing 11
In all the franchises, some of the players retained for the 2024 season did not get a consistent chance in the playing XI.
The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw exhilarating performances throughout the tournament. Big hitters have brought about a revolution in batting, making scores of 250+ no longer a winning total. While many stars graced the stage, some did not get a chance to showcase their talent.
Ahead of every IPL season, all franchises have the right to retain and release their players. This will help in acquiring the required players in the auction and strengthen the squad for the upcoming season. In all the franchises, some of the players retained for the 2024 season did not get a consistent chance in the playing XI.
Here are the top five retained players who lost their place in the playing XI:
5. Mukesh Choudhary (CSK)
Mukesh Choudhary made a mark in his debut IPL season in 2022, finishing as the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) highest wicket-taker with 16 scalps. The left-arm pacer did not play a single game in IPL 2023 due to injury, but his phenomenal performance in the previous edition encouraged the management to retain him.
However, Chaudhary played just one match in the 2024 season, in which he had a forgettable outing. He bowled the second-most expensive over of IPL 2024, conceding 27 runs in a single over against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He lost the trust of the captain and the management and never got a chance again.

4. Akash Madhwal (MI)
Akash Madhwal had a breakout season in 2023, but that didn't earn him a regular place in Mumbai Indians' (MI) playing XI the following season. The right-arm pacer took 14 wickets in eight matches at an average of 15.64. He also registered one of the best figures in IPL history—5/5.
His exploits with the ball prompted MI to retain him for the 2024 season, but the 30-year-old did not get many opportunities to showcase his talent. He played just five matches in the 17th edition and picked up as many wickets.
