Asia Cup 2023: Rating performances of teams in Group Stage

The Asia Cup 2023 group stage came to an end on September 5, 2023, and that saw Sri Lanka edging out Afghanistan by 2 runs in a thrilling contest to confirm their spot in the Super 4s stage of the tournament. India and Pakistan qualified from Group A which saw Nepal getting eliminated after losing both their matches, while Bangladesh and Sri Lanka made it into the Super 4s from Group B, with Afghanistan being eliminated. The performances of the participating teams were very near to what their fans must have expected in the league stage. Therefore, here are the ratings of each team in the Asia Cup 2023 group stage based on performance: Nepal – 3/10 Nepal team Asia Cup. In their first match of the Asia Cup against Pakistan, Nepal managed to hold off the inevitable of a huge total by picking a few early wickets. But Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed’s centuries took Pakistan to a huge score. And then Nepal batters couldn’t withstand the Pakistan pace attack and crumbled for 104 all out. Against India, Nepal batters benefitted from sloppy catching and fielding and posted a very decent total against off-colour Indian bowling. However, their bowlers were no match for a rampaging Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. However, the Nepal team went back with valuable experience learning from ace cricketers from both sides; Pakistan and India, which would encourage them to do better constantly. KODIKARA/AFP via Getty Images) Afghanistan would probably call themselves unlucky as they missed the chance to qualify for the Super 4s by a whisker. There were many expectations from Afghanistan in the tournament as they were seen as a dangerous opponent. However, they were outplayed in their first match against Bangladesh as Afghan bowlers were taken to the cleaners of a batting-friendly surface in Lahore. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto hammered centuries as Bangladesh posted 334/5. In response, the Afghan batters faltered with Ibrahim Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi hitting fifties. But they couldn’t overhaul the target and lost by 89 runs. However, their heartbreaking moment came against Sri Lanka, when due to a lack of knowledge about qualification rules and how many runs they needed, Afghanistan missed out on Super 4s qualification in a banger of a match. (Photo Source: ASIF HASSAN/AFP via Getty Images) Sri Lanka, the defending champions of the Asia Cup tournament, qualified for the Super 4s with some difficulty though they had won their first match against Bangladesh by 5 wickets in Pallekele. It was a total team effort by the Islanders. Their second match against Afghanistan was probably the match of the Asia Cup league stage. They posted a decent 291 batting first in Lahore and then despite having the upper hand for most of the match, the Afghan team made a spirited comeback. But Sri Lanka held their nerves and managed to eke out a 2-run win and made it into the Super 4s. India- 6/10 Indian-Team. (Photo Source: BCCI) Much was expected from the Indian team when they clashed with Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2023 opener. But Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah blew away the top order in an incredible display of pace bowling. Thanks to Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan, India managed to salvage some pride before rains rendered the encounter to 'no result'. Even against Nepal, Indian bowlers were let down by poor catching and shoddy fielding with 3 easy catches dropped in the first 20 balls. Nepal managed to post 235 runs and in a rain-reduced target, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill hammered the opposition bowlers for a 10-wicket win. Bangladesh- 7/10 Bangladesh vs. India, 2nd ODI 2022. However, they roared back in grand style against Afghanistan in Lahore, first putting up 334/5 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto hitting centuries. Then their bowlers kept Afghanistan to 245 as Shakib and co. won by 89 runs.Th Shakib Al Hasan-led side would be hoping to make an upset in this year's continental tournament and get the trophy home. Pakistan- 8/10 Pakistan-Team. (Photo Source: Twitter) Pakistan was the best team in Group A as they first hammered minnow Nepal by 238 runs with Babar Azam hitting 151 and Iftikhar Ahmed hitting his maiden ODI ton. Then Shadab Khan and Co. bowled out the Nepal side for just 104 runs. Against India, Shaheen Afridi rattled the top-order with 4/35 including wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja, helping his team keep India to 266 runs. However, they didn’t get to bat due to rain and what could’ve been an interesting match was rendered no result.
