Best England XI in IPL History

England players enjoy a cult following in the Indian Premier League. This is despite the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) initial reluctance to permit the involvement of domestic cricketers in the cash-rich league. One of the first few players from England to play in England was Kevin Pietersen, who even had a showdown with the ECB as he pushed for more freedom to play in the IPL. However, since then, the ECB has softened its stance and this has led to many England players showcasing their talent with the ball and the bat in the richest T20 league in the world. Here is the best England XI in IPL history: 1. Jos Buttler (C/WK) Jos Buttler. (Photo Source: Twitter) Jos Buttler has made a huge impression on the IPL with his brilliant batting and keeping abilities. He had made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians, before finding a home at the Rajasthan Royals. Here he got the opportunity to open the innings and this saw him unleashing his full potential. To date, Jos Buttler has scored 3223 runs in 96 IPL matches at a strike rate of 148.32 and an average of 37.92. He has hit 5 centuries and 19 fifties to his name. His best outing was in IPL 2022 when he made 863 runs with 4 centuries and 4 fifties with a strike rate of 149.05. His experience in IPL has helped him win the T20 World Cup for England as well. 2. Jonny Bairstow Jonny Bairstow. (Photo Source: Twitter) Who is better to partner Jos Buttler at the top than the only other English opener to have a huge impact in IPL, Jonny Bairstow? Bairstow is not as creative as his teammate Buttler, but muscling the ball is one of his main skills. Bairstow is an excellent opener who makes good use of the powerplay and rarely fails to get the innings off to a brisk start. He has played 39 IPL matches scoring 1291 runs at a strike rate of 142.95. He has hit one century and 9 fifties in his career and his highest score is 114, which he had made for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He will be seen in action for Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, as he missed the IPL 2023 after fracturing his leg in an accident last year. 3. Kevin Pietersen Kevin Pietersen. (Photo Source: Twitter) Kevin Pietersen is one of the few English cricketers from his era who has had success in the Indian Premier League. Pietersen used to be one of the greatest all-round English batters of all time. He was very proficient at playing on Indian pitches. The former England captain played 36 IPL matches across five seasons. In these 36 matches, he scored 1001 runs at an average of 37.07. His career strike rate of 134.72 and IPL century are proof of his T20 heroics in India. 4. Moeen Ali Moeen Ali. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) The only England spinner to succeed in the Indian Premier League, Moeen Ali has also shown his ability with the bat in the IPL. He has 33 wickets from 59 matches in IPL with an economy of 6.95 and best bowling of 4/26. Apart from his bowling, Moeen can also be a good finisher or opener. He has scored 1034 runs at a strike rate of 143.02 with a best of 93 and five fifties to his name. 5. Eoin Morgan The former England captain Eoin Morgan had a start-and-stop career in the Indian Premier League. He was the type of player you wanted on your team when you were trying to average high numbers. He is capable of playing both offensive and defensive roles in the batting lineup. Morgan can also be useful as a finisher. He made his IPL debut in 2010 for RCB, and went on to play 83 matches, scoring 1405 runs with a strike rate of 122.60. His highest score was 68 and he made a total of 5 fifties in his career. However, he excelled in leadership roles and led the Kolkata Knight Riders to the final of the IPL 2021, despite taking over as captain mid-way into the tournament. 6. Ben Stokes Ben-Stokes. He made his debut in IPL in 2017 for Rising Pune Supergiants and won the Mos Valuable Player award the same season. Then he had an outstanding run with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL before joining CSK for one season. He has 935 runs and 28 wickets in 45 IPL matches thus far with 2 centuries to his name. His highest score is 107* and his strike rate is 133.95. His best bowling performance was 3/15 and his economy was 8.64. From batting to fielding and bowling, Stokes aces in all departments. His IPL numbers can vouch for that as they are just phenomenal. 7. Liam Livingstone Liam Livingstone. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Liam Livingstone is a hard-hitting batter who is an excellent finisher for any team. He is also a handy spinner who can hold his own against the best of the batters of the opposition. Livingstone can transform the complexion of a game in the blink of an eye, which he has done regularly for the Punjab Kings in 2022. He has the potential to be an IPL staple for years to come. He has played 32 matches in the IPL thus far and scored 828 runs with a strike rate of 165.60 and with a best score of 94. He has made 6 fifties thus far and has taken 8 wickets with a best of 3/27 in his IPL career so far. 8. Chris Jordan Chris Jordan. (Photo Source: Twitter) Chris Jordan may not be one of the England Cricket Team's top bowlers, but he is one of the few English pacers who have delivered notable performances in the IPL. Jordon specializes in slower balls and cutters, which might be useful at death. He also understands his way around the bat, increasing the depth of this XI to number ten. Jordan has appeared for various franchises and played 34 games taking 30 wickets at an economy of 9.61. His best bowling performance is 4/41 and he last appeared for Mumbai Indians as a replacement player for Jofra Archer. 9. Sam Curran Sam Curran. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Once the most expensive players ever bought in the IPL, Sam Curran has made quite an impact in his short IPL career. He began his career with Punjab Kings and picked a hat-trick in his debut season. He then moved to Chennai Super Kings for a couple of seasons and learned a lot from MS Dhoni. Curran has excelled with both the bat and the ball. Sam Curran has played 46 games in IPL, scoring 613 runs with 3 fifties to his name at a strike rate of 143.22. With the ball, he has 42 wickets at an economy of 9.52 with the best bowling of 4/11. 10. Chris Woakes Chris Woakes. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) Chris Woakes is the second-best English pacer to ever play in the IPL. Woakes, a powerplay specialist with the ball, has a respectable, if not outstanding, IPL record. He has gone for a couple of runs near the end and has been unplayable on occasion with the new ball. In 21 IPL matches, Woakes has 30 wickets at an economy of 8.97 with best bowling of 3/36. He will be seen in action for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2024. 11. Jofra Archer Jofra-Archer. (Photo Source: X/Twitter) Jofra Archer has been part of the IPL for only four seasons but is by far the best English pacer in the history of the Indian Premier League. He made his debut for Rajasthan Royals and was their spearhead in IPL 2019 and 2020. He has had a string of ailments in recent years, but when he is healthy, he is undoubtedly one of the world's top three T20 fast bowlers. Archer, who can bowl with the new ball and at the death, is a bowler that every T20 club would like to have in their lineup. In only 40 IPL matches, Archer has 48 wickets with a best bowling of 3/15 and an economy of 7.43. He has also played some cameos with the bat as well, hitting at a strike rate of 155.47.
