WPL 2023: Flop playing XI from inaugural season
The maiden Women's Premier League concluded on March 26 with Mumbai Indians defeating Delhi Capitals to lift the trophy.
8. Georgia Wareham
Australian leg-spinner Georgia Wareham’s phenomenal T20 International record helped her to find a buyer at the 2023 WPL auction. Relying on her talent and experience, Gujarat Giants (GG) reserved her services for the competition at INR 75 lakh. Along with Ashleigh Gardner and Sneh Rana, she was expected to bolster the spin attack of the team.
The 23-year-old got a place in the playing XI against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Gujarat's maiden contest. Along with other GG bowlers, Wareham also received a brutal beating from MI batters. In her three-over spell, she splurged 30 runs and got Nat Sciver-Brunt’s wicket. Following her performance against MI, Giants didn’t include her in their next two games.
However, the GG team management called her back against the quality side of Delhi Capitals (DC) in match number nine. Playing at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, GG batters could put up a mere 105/9 on the board following which, there was little Wareham could do with the ball. Nevertheless, she chipped in with 22 runs with the bat but that didn’t convince GG to include her in the next matches.
