IND vs SL: Why did Shivam Mavi get cap number 100 and Shubman Gill 101?
Shubman Gill and Shivam Mavi made their debuts in the first T20I match against Sri Lanka.
India batter Shubman Gill and pacer Shivam Mavi made their T20 international debuts in the ongoing T20I contest against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both sides welcomed the New Year as they locked horns in the first of the three-match T20I series held in India.
While team India begins a transition phase under Hardik Pandya in the T20Is with few new faces, one of the highlight aspects of the match is Gill and Mavi making their T20I debuts. One interesting point was the cap numbers handed to the two debutants.
Every player making his/her receives a cap either from the coach or the skipper of the side to formally mark their debut for the national side in any format. Mavi was handed the cap number 100 while Gill received cap number 101. The same gave rise to a question as to how are the cap numbers for players decided when more than one make debut in the same game.
As per the norm, when two or more players make their debut in the same game, the numbers are awarded in alphabetical order. Going by this, as Shivam Mavi’s name would be listed above in the alphabetical order as compared with Gill, he received cap number 100 while the latter was handed 101.
Therefore, a cap number 100 signifies Mavi is the 100th player to represent India in T20 internationals. Notably, India became only the second country after Australia to hand out 100 caps in T20Is.
